Monsters Have Rights Too! Or, How Would The Monsters From The British Isles Tradition React To The EU Referendum, According To Their Own Legends

In the light of recent events that occurred on 23rd of June 2016, when the majority of the UK population voted to leave the EU, in what is now considered to be an historic referendum, I started asking myself what would the highly neglected part of the British Isles lore do, hypothetically, if they had a right to vote in the first place. These individuals have shaped the legendary image of these territories since the beginning of time, and even had their monstrous little fingers dipped in certain aspects of history. Yes, I am talking about monsters that dwell in the darkness of myths and legends, because monsters have rights, too!

Here are five of the scariest ones and how would they possibly react to current affairs, according to their own legends:

1.Bean Nighe is a scary creature from the Highlands that dwells around water and according to the legend, she embodies the monstrous figure of the witch, often appearing in the form of an old hag with one tooth and one nostril, although she can sometimes surprise lost travellers in the form of a beautiful woman to lure them in. Now, the trick is not to succumb to her allure, but instead to ask her 3 questions, if you have the time to do it before you die that is, to which she has to answer truthfully. So, if you ask her:

...the third option many of us didn't have while voting, otherwise the whole country would be sitting in the pub having a pint and a nice chat waiting for the situation to blow over, what do you think, which box would Bean Nighe tick? And would her answer, or lack of it, save a traveller's life?

2.Loch Ness Monster – according to the recent viewings of this most legendary monster that is still a vital part of the tourism story in the country (everyone knows about the shy Nessie all over the world), Nessie got the whole referendum issue quite literally, spreading all of her "remains" on the shore of the loch! We know where she stands on this current issue.

3.Black Shuck – British folklore has been imbued with creatures of black vengeful dogs with glaring eyes for centuries now. These dogs represent Satan himself, and Black Shuck is the fiercest of them all! Originating from East Anglia and surrounding areas, the Black Shuck legend says that should you see him in an (un)likely scenario of walking around aimlessly trying to find your way back, you should shut your eyes and hide, if you don't trip on something in the process, otherwise you will become cursed for the rest of your short life, referring to the fact of basically turning a blind eye to what is going on. Now, Black Shuck would fit in well in our modern society, especially referendum wise, don't you think?

4.The Knocker – originally from Wales and Cornwall, the Knocker is a mischievous little fiend, a spirit of a dead miner inhabiting tunnels and making a knocking noise inside the rocky tomb. Looking quite scary, with big head, big beard and long arms that drag through the dust in the mines, and possessing all the sharp mining tools, he is the master of misdirection and deceit (rings a bell, anyone?) who will lure you in, and make you doubt your decisions on any matter at hand.

5.Vampire - Alas, the famous monster of them all! Originating from Eastern Europe, ironically, the vampire is a bloodsucking creature who has gone through numerous changes in its representational image, and settling down through literature and films in the British Isles as one of the greatest inconspicuous threats to humanity! With all the current issues happening right now, and turbulent times that we live in, vampires have silently observed how human race is slowly trying to destroy themselves, with the help of their vampire agents infiltrated in our society, poking and picking human brains in order to get what they want. Including blood…lots of blood. It is the greatest conspiracy never told, a vampire domination over humans by using the simplest and most effective way, as proven throughout history, to first divide and then conquer (as seen on July 23rd 2016).
