    In Defense Of Comfort Food

"There is no sincerer love than the love of food." -George Bernard Shaw

It's no secret that we live in a world rampant with delicious, often cheap, often not-so-good-for-you food. And yet, indulging in "comfort food" comes with negative judgements about health and body image- from society, yes, but the worst come from ourselves. So many people I know beat ourselves up for that extra slice of pizza or a few too many cookies because we worry about what gaining some extra pounds might do for our body image. And let me tell you, we live in a confusing age when it comes to food stigmas! Not only does pop culture portray thin or ripped bodies as the aesthetic idea, it also encourages the "treat yo' self" mentality when it comes to snacks. Because YOLO, am I right? So what's a girl (or boy, or whatever gender you identify as) to do?

I LOVE good food. Food is one of my true passions, seriously, and I firmly believe that it is good for the soul. One's relationship to food is intimate and meaningful. I mean food porn is a real thing, people, just look on tumblr and tell me it doesn't do something for you. Food has long been an important center of social gatherings, a peace offering, a gesture of hospitality. Food is kind, it is heartwarming, and of course- it is nourishing.

A brilliant, inspiring professor of mine stressed the importance of eating something warm or comforting after we had a particularly emotional or vulnerable experience onstage. "Food and theatre serve the same purpose- they nourish," he said. Whenever we go through any emotional journey- a breakup, a promotion, a tough scene or just a long day at work, it's more than natural to want to heal or celebrate your exposed heart with some food. My go-to's are typically hot chocolate, popcorn, toast, or frozen yogurt after a long rehearsal. Just listen to your body, it will tell you if it really just needs that bagel or smoothie or tea and cookie today. Of course, health and moderation are very legitimate factors; I am simply saying that no one should feel guilty for every so often appeasing one of our most basic human cravings of comfort and sustainability. Be gentle and good to yourself, eat well, and ENJOY.
