10 Things Disapointingly Left Out Of The Movie Adaptations

These are the reasons for the saying: "The book is almost always better than the movie". Grumpy book purists everywhere faceplamed in disappointment when these things were infuriatingly cut out of the movie.

There is an immense excitement that overwhelms book lovers everywhere when they find out one of their favorite books is being made into a movie. That excitement, however; is short-lived, and typically followed by a nervous trepidation.

"Are they going to ruin it?"

"What are they going to leave out?"

"Who are they gonna cast?"

"Are they gonna ruin it!?"

When the movie finally comes along, the book faithful often walk out of theaters mumbling much like grumpy seniors expressing dismay with kids these days to no one in particular, heads bowed, doused in disappointment, fears devastatingly confirmed.

Here are the 10 biggest disappointments we have endured upon watching the film adaptations of our favorite books.

10. Nick's Possible Bi-Sexuality in The Great Gatsby

This mysterious passage from the book which has had readers debating for decades certainly has some important implications, which were totally left out of the movie. The elevator scene occurs after Nick Carraway and Mr. McKee leave the party they were at with Tom and his mistress, and ride down in the elevator together:

'Come to lunch some day,' he suggested, as we groaned down the elevator.
'Where?'
'Anywhere.'
'Keep your hands off the lever,' snapped the elevator boy.
'I beg your pardon,' said Mr McKee with dignity, 'I didn't know I was touching it.'
'All right,' I agreed, 'I'll be glad to.'
...I was standing beside his bed and he was sitting up between the sheets, clad in his underwear, with a great portfolio in his hands.
'Beauty and the Beast...Loneliness...Old Grocery Horse...Brook'n Bridge...'
Then I was lying half asleep in the lower level of the Pennsylvania Station, staring at the morning Tribune, and waiting for the four o'clock train.

If Nick was indeed shown as possibly bi-sexual in the film, it would definitely shed a whole new light on his obsession with Gatsby.

9. The Amount of Time Pat Spent in A Mental Institution in Silver Linings Playbook

In the book, Pat spent four grueling years in a mental institution after his divorce. In the film, he'd been in for only eight months. Clearly, the amount of time spent in a mental institution must have some important bearings on the sanity (or lack thereof) of the leading character, no? The four years Pat spent in the mental institution in the book really messed with his conception of who he was as a person. Drastically shortening that seemed to take away from the gravity of his situation. Furthermore, in the book, when he finds out Tiffany was the one writing the letters to him pretending to be Nikki, he wants to beat the shit out of her:

"I want to hit Tiffany.
I want to pound her face with my knuckles until the bones in my hands crumble and Tiffany is completely unrecognizable, until she no longer has a face from which she can spew lies."

In the movie version, he's totally cool about it. Maybe because his totally frayed mental health was so radically downplayed.

Kind of deprived us of some of those intense feels. /Deep sigh.

8. Rum Diary's Everything, Due to Yeoman's Absence

Hunter Thomson fans everywhere were rather disappointed in this adaptation of the book, especially the ending. In fact, it has been called "the movie without an ending". Because a crucial character was left out of the film version, Yeoman (described as a "an unhinged journalist and pivotal character"), the ending was kind of just a chaotic, senseless mess (I know, that sounds very HST, but not in that deliciously destructive kind of way). He was replaced by Aaron Eckhart's Sanderson, who was nothing like Yeoman. Due to his absence, many other scenes only half made sense, and certainly paled in comparison with the original story's version.

One review, entitled: The Rum Diary: Hunter Would Turn In His Firework Display, stated the following:

"It’s infuriating that Robinson’s Rum Diary deviates so dramatically from the source material, inexplicably overwriting key storylines, themes and even characters with convoluted replacements – seemingly just for the hell of it. Worse still, what’s left saunters between boring and cringeworthy."

7. Evey Being a Prostitute in V for Vendetta

One of the major differences between the graphic novel and the film, is the character of Evey. In the novel, she is a 16 year old, down and out prostitute. In the film, she seems to be a well paid employee of the British Cable Network. This changes the nature of her character, and makes it less clear why she is willing to comply with V as eagerly seeing as she is far less exposed to the seedy underbelly of their society, and by consequence, far less likely to want to change things.

6. Peeta Loosing his Leg in The Hunger Games

In the book, during the 74th Hunger Games, Peeta suffers a bad leg injury and ends up losing his leg. He eventually gets a prosthetic and can walk normally again. While this was obviously a big deal in the book, it was completely left out of the movie. So were a million other important things, a lot of them key to Peeta and Katniss's relationship development. This was just the most obvious. I mean you notice when a main character looses a leg. Just saying.

5. That Suicidal Poem from Perks of Being a Wallflower

I had to re-read that poem 3 times when I was reading the book. I cried. Buckets. Where was it in the movie? They totally could have squeezed it in there. I mean it is alluded to in the film, but not given it's own moment. I can picture the scene in my head, Charlie reading it to his friends at the Christmas party while a sad slow instrumental song plays in the background, and the camera slowly shifting between shots of Charlie reading, and his friend's faces as they watch him in awe - Sam shedding a few silent tears, and Patrick sadly smiling at his adorably sweet, weird little friend. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

Edit: I AM AN ORACLE. This deleted scene has been brought to my attention. I basically wrote it in my brain, and YouTube produced it. Definitely a satisfying watch. IT EXISTS.

4. Pinocchio Murdering Jiminy Cricket

In the original tale, "upon meeting Jiminy Cricket for the first time, Jiminy Cricket warns Pinocchio of the perils of disobedience and hedonism. In return for Jiminy Cricket warning him, Pinocchio kills Jiminy Cricket by bashing his brains in with a hammer." He later goes on to land his dad in jail and get himself killed. Dark.

Honestly, I can see why they might have left those bits out.

3. Peeves from Harry Potter

Obviously, a lot had to be cut from the Harry Potter books in order to make the movies. But of all the "non-essential" characters to not make the cut, Peeves was the biggest disappointment. The trouble-making maniacal poltergeist would certainly have made for a few memorably amusing scenes. Nearly-headless Nick had nothing on Peevsie, IMHO.

2. The True Extent of Carrie's Murderous Rampage

In the movies (both the original and the remake), Carrie goes on a murderous rampage at the prom and kills most of her classmates. In the book, Carrie's rampage extends to most of the town. She blows up gas tanks everywhere and then cuts off the water supply so that the fire department can't put out the flames. Also, the book version of Carrie is overweight and has acne.

1. Fight Club's Ending

Although the movie did an amazing job of staying true to the essence of the book, the ending was completely changed. In the book, after the narrator shoots himself though the cheek, he wakes up in a mental hospital believing he's in heaven, and thinking his psychiatrist is God. In the movie, he just ends with Marla, seeming rid of Tyler for good.
