Remy Ma Opens Up About Life In Prison, Pregnancy Struggles, And The Beef With Nicki Minaj

"It would've been cooler if Nicki and I were able to work together."

Rapper Remy Ma sat down for a live interview with Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu of BuzzFeed's Another Round podcast Tuesday evening, and nothing was off limits.

The two-time Grammy nominee opened up about the incarceration system, motherhood, infertility issues, and yes, her recent rap beef with Nicki Minaj. Here are some standout moments from the conversation.

1. "Prison is worse for women than it is for men."

Remy Ma was incarcerated for over six years for shooting a friend over a dispute about money. Consequently, she had some insight on mass incarceration as a whole, and especially on how it affects women.

"I served time with women who went over a decade without anyone to come see them," she said, after recounting how she's seen men have multiple girlfriends visiting them in jail. "And women get double the sentence a man would get for the same time. They feel like, 'You're a woman, you're supposed to be a nurturer...how dare you commit a crime?'"

2. In her prison experience, getting lipstick was easier than getting pads and tampons.

"I only got to take a shower three days a week. On the other days, you get a bucket of hot water. So when that time of the month rolls around, you want to die. And the way it's set up, for women, you can get a curling iron and lipstick...but you can't get sanitary napkins or tampons. It's stupid."

3. "There's no logic to the sentencing."

"I'd be there with someone who had a similar case as me and I'd have eight years and she'd have 28 years. And the girl over there who has nowhere near as violent a crime...something to do with checks or credit cards...and she has 15 years. They can pretty much give you whatever number they feel like and your life is done."

4. Remy also got real about her ectopic pregnancy, arguing that people who oppose abortion should care as much about helping women get pregnant as they do about keeping women pregnant.

"This was my second ectopic pregnancy, a complication of pregnancy in which the embryo attaches outside the uterus, so I've lost both of my fallopian tubes.

"While I was crying in the hospital bed the doctor told me, 'It's fine, you still have your uterus and your eggs are good, you can just do in vitro fertilization. We can put the baby where it needs to be, it'll cost you anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000.' I didn't think about it because, not to brag, I have the $10,000 to $20,000 to pay for it. It wasn't until I came out with [my story] that I learned a lot of women also have this issue.

"We have all these politicians that claim they're pro-life and that say women should not be able to get abortions and all this other stuff...there's nothing more pro-life than helping a woman who wants to have a child have a child. Then I realized that health insurance doesn't cover IVF. I could use my health insurance to not have a child if I want to, but I can't use my health insurance to conceive. That made me start paying attention to what's really going on in this world when it comes to women."

5. Yes, the Nicki beef was also discussed.

After explaining that it was the behind-the-scenes career interference that ultimately pushed her to release "Shether," she noted that she wishes things could've gone differently between her and Minaj. "I actually liked her but don't try and come for me," she said. "It just bothers me that me picking apart another female is what went viral. We could've done this working together."

When Nigatu asked why that didn't happen, Remy responded, "It wasn't me, I just think it would've been cooler if we came together and did something crazy and that's what everyone was talking about. I don't regret it, I'm just not particularly proud of it."

Remy also made it clear that the situation is over on her end. When asked if she thinks Minaj will respond, Remy replied, "I don't care."

6. And last but not least, Remy had a few choice "signs" for Foxy Brown.
