2. World Without End

Netflix / Divulgação

The sequel to The Pillars of the Earth is set 157 years after the events of the first series. The protagonists are four children who witness something they probably shouldn't have while out on a walk in the woods someday.

3. Camelot

4. Neverland

The series is a prequel to the classic story. Or rather, it shows the events that came before the Peter Pan story that everyone knows: his path from a street kid in Victorian London to the hero of Neverland.

Watch it on iTunes.

6. Penny Dreadful

Netflix / Divulgação

Full of beautiful and dark imagery, this series borrows characters from literary greats such as Frankenstein's monster and Dorian Gray (as in "the portrait of...") in an intriguing gothic horror tale.

Watch on Hulu (with a Showtime log-in).

7. Torchwood

Netflix / Divulgação

Torchwood started as a spin-off of the cult British series Doctor Who, but quickly grew into its own much grittier series. The show follows a team of alien hunters who defend the Earth from space threats.

9. Goosebumps

Horror tales based on a series of children's books of the same name. This definitely isn't going to be Game of Thrones, but it's a good series for anyone who's looking for something that will keep them on the edge of their seats. (No joke!)

Watch it on iTunes.

10. The Leftovers

HBO

After 2% of the planet's population suddenly and mysteriously disappears, the rest of humanity has to cope with the emotional, spiritual, and practical consequences of 140 million people gone missing.

Watch it on HBO Go.

11. Black Mirror

Watch it on Netflix.

12. The Returned

Netflix / Divulgação

If you're looking for something that will give you hope for your own favorite characters coming back from the dead, this supernatural thriller might do the trick. In a small town, the victims of a fatal bus accident reappear as if nothing ever happened. (The American version was cancelled after one season, but the original French series, Les Revenants, is still going strong.)

13. The Bridge

14. Top of the Lake

The scenery of New Zealand will definitely remind you of the hills and valleys of Westeros, but the story is a bit of a departure. Season One follows Detective Robin Griffin (played by Elizabeth Moss) as she investigates the disappearance of a pregnant teenager, but each season tracks a whole new investigation.

Watch it on Netflix.

15. The Americans

Netflix / Divulgação

The Americans is about two Soviet spies living deep undercover on American soil during the Cold War. It's got all the intrigue and tension of Game of Thrones, and its currently on its fourth season, so there's plenty to keep you busy.

Watch it on iTunes.

16. Jane the Virgin

Netflix / Divulgação

And just for overall decompression, try this super lightweight series that plays with themes from Mexican soap operas. Jane, who has never had sex, has an artificial insemination by mistake (!) and the confusion starts from there.
