Indonesians are famous for their friendliness, politeness and smiles. Oh, and they say weird things too.

Do not get offended if you meet a long-lost Indonesian friend and that is the first comment he utters to you. Gaining weight or simply looking chubbier in Indonesia is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. People say this to complement you, as if they’re saying “Now you can afford more food than you used to! Well done you!”

2. “Ini oleh-oleh …” meaning “the random gifts we bring for you”

Indonesians love giving gifts. The one they made, the one they bought, the one the bought and then made. The list is endless. Irregardless whether it’s you or them that are coming home, expect for some gifts … And for other Indonesians, expect to reciprocate in the same manners.

3. “Ayo, makan.” meaning “let’s eat”

If you find yourself walking into a room where Indonesians are eating, be prepared to be invited. Most of them would nod their head and invite you to join them. If you are Indonesian, you are likely to refuse (because saying ‘yes’ the first time you’re being asked is considered rude), so it is kind of a useless gesture really.

4. “Kalau tidak bobo digigit nyamuk.” meaning “If you don’t sleep now, mosquitos will bite you.”

Try reciting the first four words, (if you don’t sleep) and 9 out of 10, Indonesians will reply with the highly doubtful flash news that mosquitos will suddenly be interested in drinking your blood dry. (Because Indonesians mosquitos are polite enough not to bite you while you’re awake)
