9 Thoughts That I, A Super Crime Fan, Had While Watching "The Gloaming"

If you've been on the lookout for your next crime-fix, then ohh boy, have I got the show for you.

The Stan Original Series The Gloaming dropped on New Year's Day and follows the story of two detectives — played by Emma Booth and Ewen Leslie — who are tasked with solving a murder that quickly becomes very sinister and very complicated.

As a self-confessed ~uber crime fan~, I've had high expectations for this one since Stan first announced their summer lineup of original productions. And let me tell you, it DELIVERED.

Seriously, this show has it all. From incredible acting, to genuine scares, unresolved sexual tension and a plot line that kept me guessing from scene to scene. I'm obsessed.

Here are are nine thoughts I had while devouring it:

1. Wow, I sure hope there are some deals on flights to Tassie right now.

Stan

Murdering and mayhem aside, the scenery in this show is bloody stunning. Bleak? Yes. Wildly inappropriate? Perhaps.

Filmed entirely in Tasmania using iconic landmarks like Kunayni/Mount Wellington and the River Derwent, The Gloaming makes for eight-hours of serious travel inspo — mangled bodies aside.

Writer and producer, Vicki Madden, who was raised in Tasmania, says that the setting was integral to the spookiness of the show: "[Tassie has] a kind of a lingering darkness, or a sense of otherness — a sublime character that’s bigger; an omnipresence." Too right, Vi.

2. Did I really see that, or am I just hallucinating things because I'm freaked out?

What really wigged me out in the first episode were the incidental appearances of eerie, hooded figures in the background of shots. I'm not a jumpy kinda gal, but it got me EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

If you scare easily, I'd recommend watching this one with a friend (read: emotional support person).

3. You two need to stop fighting crime for a second and just makeout.

Honestly, the sexual tension is thicccc, my friends. These two play past-lovers, who have gone a whopping 23 years without seeing one another.

And let me just say, when they're reunited in the very first episode, it's ABUNDANTLY clear that there's some serious unfinished business going on. So if you like your crime-fighting with a side of lust, The Gloaming is for you.

4. This show is giving me serious supernatural vibes and I like it.

Much like Vicki Madden’s iconic The Kettering Incident, the crime in The Gloaming is twisted in with supernatural elements — which makes the plot tension so much juicer.

Give me other-worldly crimes over straight-up murder mysteries any day of the week.

5. I know the answer to whodunit, but what I'm really interested in is whydunit?

While the killer is revealed right off the bat, what really hooked me into The Gloaming was that, as the investigation unfolded, something darker, sinister and more insidious was revealed — which left me scratching my head as to why the murders took place?

6. Molly is a badass and I would like her to be my BFF.

Stan

Sure, she seems to have a drinking problem and a penchant for breaking into people's homes as soon as they're out the door, but isn't she just goddamn fantastic?

She's also a single mother to her estranged teenage daughter and a secret vigilante — which makes her far more layered than your typical crime lead (i.e. old, white male).

7. God, is it refreshing hearing those Aussie accents or what!?

Stan

As a major crime fan, I've gotten used to hearing almost entirely British or American accents when it comes to binge-watching my ~stories~. So to finally have a series that is in our own unique voice is a thing of true beauty.

Some of the key Australian stars in The Gloaming include Emma Booth, Ewen Leslie and Aaron Pedersen. Not to mention Kiwis, Martin Henderson and Rena Owen.

If this doesn't lead to the rebirth of the Aussie crime genre, I'm gonna be pissed.

8. Damn, these kids can act!

As well as the stellar lineup of familiar, older faces, The Gloaming is supported by a handful of really fantastic, young and emerging Aussie actors — who nail every scene they're in.

Josephine Blazier plays Lily Broomhall — Molly's 14-year-old daughter — and mark my words, she's going to be one to watch. Blazier is also set to star in Stan's Original Film, True History of the Kelly Gang.

9. And finally, when the hell will I get a second season?

The Gloaming ends with a bang, but like any good binge-session, it only left me wanting more.

Here's hoping Stan delivers the goods again ASAP.
