People In Pakistan Are (still) Talking About Longest Wedding Of The Year

A recent Pakistani wedding became talk of social media community in Pakistan, after it went on for eight months. At first, the #anushmunib hashtag started trending on Instagram and Twitter, on couple's Nikkah in January (the signing of marriage contract in a Muslim wedding). However, that was just the beginning of festivities that lasted until Aug. 29. The wedding events that begin from Pakistan, finally concluded in Turkey.

Desi weddings are long, as compared to western standard. Even the shortest wedding in Pakistan, normally last for at least three days, starting with a "mehndi", a pre-wedding celebration involving a lot of dancing and drum beating to actual wedding day, "baraat", followed by "walima", the wedding reception thrown by the groom, a day after the "baraat".

Most Pakistanis are used to these loud, colorful and well, long affairs called weddings. But apparently, #anushmubin took even those Pakistanis by surprise, who are used to this sort of lavish extravaganzas. It sparked a debate on twitter, while some people went gaga over bride's dress and jewelry, others criticized the couple for wasting money and unnecessary display of wealth.

It started off with a usual (and expected) "nikkah" ceremony in January, where bride and groom sign the wedding contract.

Then the festivities restarted in August. This is one of the events followed by a dozen other.

The traditional "mehndi" function that is usually a day before the actual wedding day.

While #anushmubin were enjoying their function, some people were baffled why their Instagram feed was flooded.

#anushmunib who are these people? Why is their mehndi all over my Instagram?

Still not the actual wedding day.

One commentator, on Twitter asked, "is it a wedding or [cricket] test series?"

Best comment on #Anushmunib wedding by far, "shadi hai ya test series?" HAHAHHAH. Dead.

Finally they tied the knot in Turkey. But it's not the end of celebrations yet.

Because according to the traditions, "walima", the wedding reception thrown by the groom, is the last event. And one twitter user finally asked the question, if they will ever have a walima.

Is it just me or is anyone else also wondering whether #AnushMunib will ever have a valima?
