The alien world of Earth's oceans is a great setting for science fiction and adventure store stories. Unfortunately, the majority of them tend to focus on sharks (giant or otherwise) and/or Cthulhu. Here are 11 undersea science fiction films and TV shows that although some involve monsters none of them involve sharks or Cthulhu in order from oldest to newest:

11. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954)

The Disney's adaptation of Julies Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea follows the adventures of Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilus as the explore the ocean and strive the rid the world of war and slavery. Disney is not the only company film adaption of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, it is the most well known.

10. Stingray (1964-1965)

Irwin Allen's first and longest running science fiction TV show. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is filled with action and adventures are the Seaview and her crew explore the ocean depths and keep the world safe from all manner of undersea and cold war threats.

DeepStar Six, which stars Greg Evigan, is about a team of engineer trying to build an undersea nuclear missile launch platform who accidentally release a strange creature from a deep water cavern.

6. Leviathan (1989)

In Leviathan, an undersea mining team stumbles upon a scuttled Russian ship. They salvage the ship only to be infected with a strange virus that transforms them one by one into monsters. This film stars Peter Weller and Richard Crenna.

The Rift AKA Endless Descent is sci-fi horror flick that pits a rescue submarine against the results of illegal genetic experimentation. The Rift, along with The Abyss, Leviathan, and DeepStar Six, is one of the science fiction adventure films that were release in 1989 and 1990.

3. Seaquest DSV (1993-1996)

SeaQuest DSV follows the crew of the UEO SeaQuest DSV 4600 as it explores and defends the oceans from all kinds of threats both man and monster. The show changed it name to SeaQuest DSV 2032 for it second season and replace Roy Schieder with Michael Ironside. SeaQuest DSV definitely felt with Star Trek: The Next Generation underwater.

2. Surface (2005-2006)
