Try to get boxes that are all the same size: they’ll stack better than a mishmash of sizes. Pack items based on your list, so that items that may be used together will be packed together. Keep a copy of your list at home and in your storage unit so you’ll always know what’s in the unit.
Gather up packing materials like tape, bubble wrap and paper. Consider getting specialty boxes for dishes, glassware or other breakables. These boxes have dividers inside that keep the items from touching each other, creating a smoother ride for your wine glasses and china.
Once you’re packed up, stack boxes of similar items together so that they’re easier to find. Put items you’ll need access to faster at the front of your unit.
Ask your storage facility manager about specials and amenities. You might be able to borrow a truck to move in to your space. Ask if there's a store that sells supplies you might need at a moment's notice, like tape, markers and locks. Finally, ask to see the unit you'd be assigned, or at least one that's nearby. Check to make sure the unit is clean and dry; on move-in day, check your unit before you start loading it up.
