The Hole In The Ground That's On Fire For Over 40 Years

In Darvaza, Turkmenistan in the middle of the Karakum Desert a giant hole in the ground is still on fire for over 40 years.

The locally named name 'The Door To Hell' has been on fire since 1971 due to Soviet geologists drilling in the area when the drilling rig collapsed creating the hole For safety reasons the geologists decided to set it on fire to burn out the natural gas and expected it to last only a few days. However, its lasted over forty years.
