Organizations that I have and currently am working with Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy www.griid.org GRIID teaches media literacy, critical thinking skills about how media functions and how it can misinform the public on critical issues like war, race, gender, health, the environment, consumerism and elections. We also act as a media watchdog of the news in West Michigan and have published numerous reports that demonstrate that the corporate media fails the public miserably on critical issues. GRIID works with community-based organizations on how to use media as an organizing tool. GRIID is amazing and really helped me to break out of my shell and think differently about the world around me. I truly began to open my eyes and see the injustice around me and want to stand up and make a change in the world I live in. Jeff Smith and Girbe Eefsting are two of the most amazing people I have met in a long time, they are true activist and pioneers for change. Our Kitchen Table http://www.oktable.org/Home Our Kitchen Table (OKT) proposes to build the capacity of urban residents residing in Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan. Our Kitchen Table helps everyday residents understand the power of neighbor-to-neighbor relations. We bring neighbors together to talk about and strategize around community issues. I love how community based OKT is it’s like whenever you work with them you just feel this sense of ownership of self and home. The work that they are doing is wonderful and amazing; teaching people to live and eat healthy
