7 Things A Medical Volunteer Learned While Helping Nepal's Earthquake Relief

Rutvik Khakhar volunteered at a medical camp in Nepal and spoke to BuzzFeed India about his experience.

Rutvik Khakhar, an MBBS graduate from India, recently volunteered at a medical camp in Nepal in the wake of the devastating earthquakes.

While he was helping out, Rutvik managed to capture some stirring images from Nepal, and learnt about some remarkable stories of survival.

After a 10-day stay at the base camp, Rutvik returned to India and wrote about his experience. These are his views on the relief efforts:

    1. As much as 90% of the villages around the area where Rutvik's medical camp was set up had been destroyed.

    2. There is a lot of "mismanagement and a lack of coordination amongst organisations."

    3. "A good amount of disaster relief has reached Nepal."

    4. However, there are "discrepancies in the distribution of material going from Kathmandu to the rest of the affected areas."

    5. "The damages have taken their highest toll in the interiors."

    6. "But the interiors are where the locals have scant supplies in terms of food and medical aid."

    7. "While supplies may be available there aren’t basic facilities like kitchens, shelters or sanitation to accommodate them."

Rutvik told BuzzFeed India that seeing the suffering first-hand made him want to bring light to the issues that are hampering rescue efforts.

Let's hope this information will be useful to those who are actively involved in bringing a country back on its feet.
