This Is What Happens When The Band That Became Green Day Reunites For One Night

Sweet Children returned for the first time since 1989, for one night only!

Just days before their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Green Day played a one-off show at the House of Blues in Cleveland

The night was packed with surprises, from a reunion of Sweet Children, the band that would become Green Day, to appearances by Rancid's Tim Armstrong.

The set began with Al Sobrante aka John Kiffmeyer aka the original Green Day drummer fumbling around stage and awkwardly talking into the mic, pretending he'd just woken up after oversleeping, was running late for a show and couldn't find a pay phone anywhere in Cleveland to warn the venue.

Then the rest of the band - Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt - walked onto stage, and from then, the entire set felt like a family reunion.

It also felt like that hilariously awkward moment when you're watching your dad's garage band perform - lots of good-natured secondhand embarrassment.

There were bad jokes galore, and after almost every song, Sobrante would leave his drum kit to talk into Armstrong's mic, making plenty of references to "the headliners."

The setlist was full of songs originally recorded by Sweet Children, including many, like "Sweet Children" and "Green Day," that haven't been performed since at least the early 1990s.
