A Hilarious Twitter War Has Broken Out In The UK, And It's Over A Caterpillar Cake

    #FreeCuthbert!!!

If you live outside the UK, you may have been wondering why #freecuthbert was trending on Twitter for all of last weekend. Well, I am here to tell you a tale of betrayal, despair, and a nation's suffering.

    Meet Colin, the Caterpillar cake.

A birthday party is not complete without Colin at the table...or by the pothole.

while colin the caterpillar is in the news can we remember the time when a village did the most passive aggressive british protest ever and bought a caterpillar cake for the second birthday of a pothole they’d been moaning to the council about x

There's only one downside to Colin. M&S is quite the premium brand, and he doesn't come cheap. Those of us that are a little more ~thrifty~ might head to the competition for an alternative, and pretty much every supermarket in the UK sells their own version of a caterpillar cake.

It's pretty divisive and everyone has their personal favourite. Amongst the lineup, you will find Cecil, Wiggles, Curly, Clyde, and of course...Cuthbert. Here is where the story gets interesting.

Last week we found out Marks & Spencer noticed Cuthbert's resemblance to Colin, and started taking action against Aldi over the similarities which infringed on their trademarks. All pretty boring stuff, right?

Wrong. Because Aldi retaliated in the best way possible — and took to Twitter.

It started pretty low key, with some basic pun work:

    Just Colin our lawyers. #FreeCuthbert

    But then it escalated:

Judge: Show us the evidence! Us: What evidence? #FreeCuthbert

And some photo editing was involved:

    💀💀💀💀

    .@MonopolyUK Do these work? #FreeCuthbert

    Then it *really* escalated 👀

    LOL.

Had a pretty busy weekend ngl. #FreeCuthbert

M&S finally responded, and it's pretty safe to say they were a little overwhelmed.

And let me tell you, the British public had thoughts:

I’ve been away from Twitter from a few days, but from what I understand, caterpillar cakes have formed a super league? And M&S invented the walnut whip and toblerone? #FreeCuthburt

Best Cuthbert meme I’ve seen so far #FreeCuthburt #AldiUk

    It's a classic retelling #CaterpillarWars #FreeCuthburt

As of today, the UK is still waiting with bated breath to see how this will pan out. In the meantime, #FreeCuthbert!!
