7 Reasons Why Death's Jokes In "The Book Thief" Are Too Brutal

HAHAHA...that was funny, right? Markus Zusak makes Death the burdened character/narrator of the story, by making him see all the Death that happens throughout the story. He tries to lighten up the mood with a joke here and there, even though it doesn't help.

1. All the Bad Puns

Death's jokes, or puns to be more specific, aren't that funny. They're the kind of puns that would make dads cringe and make them feel good about their bad puns. "It kills me sometimes, how people die." Pg. 464

2. They are Inappropriate

'I've never felt so alive...' These are the kind of comments that aren't going to be appreciated when someone dies. "He'd have been glad to witness her kissing his dusty, bomb hit lips." (37.11) This quote was said by Death after Liesel had found Rudy and kissed him in a failed attempt to wake him up.

3. Death's Disregard for people

Death has a...specific disregard for people and the value of their lives. Although his disregard is harsh, it does fuel his jokes. He says the quote, "You are going to die." Pg. 3

This may not be a joke, but it really shows how he doesn't care about people and whether they live or die.

4. They're Pretty Corny Jokes

These jokes are the kind of crappy jokes that you would expect death to make to try to lighten up the mood. Even though he fails...terribly. The quote "It kills me sometimes, how people die." also displays a corny joke because he's death, and he can't die...get it?

5. He is Actually Pretty Rascist

Death must try really hard to drown out the sadness and screams of the characters of "The Book Thief" because he will through out a racial slur out to lighten up the mood and get a couple laughs here and there. "For me, the sky was the color of Jews." Pg. (52.3) This quote is joke on how the Jews were burned in the Holocaust and made to ashes. C'mon man

6. His Sarcasm isn't Appreciated

His jokes are filled with bad taste, bad timing, racism, and WORST of all, is Sarcasm. Sarcasm is one of the worst traits that are featured into Death's jokes and puns.

7. His Jokes Aren't Appreciated

As mentioned in all the early reasons, his jokes just aren't funny and no one likes them. Maybe it's his sort of humor. The world may never really know.
