10 Signs You Need To Get More Involved In Key Club

The top 10 signs (and ways to solve) your lack of Key Club involvement, written from the perspective of a PNW club officer.

10.) You only attend the meetings to get your name on the attendance sheet.

Let's face it. I'm sure there have been a few meetings that didn't quite catch your attention, maybe it was the abundance of ice breakers or the lack of promised snacks, BUT- how are you going to get more involved if you don't even stay to hear your club's plans?

9.) You like to complain about how Key Club is only "cliques"

This one is a real killer. Honestly, for me I've noticed that basically every high school club is going to have cliques- yet Key Club is always the one that gets the worst rep.

When I first joined Key Club, I thought the exact same thing. A few years later I can look back and say that it was only a big clique because I didn't chose to get involved enough. Once you dedicate your time by spending it alongside other Key Clubbers dedicated to service, you'll join the clique- otherwise known as a family.

8.) The only time you say Key Club, it's in the same sentence as "College Apps".

Yikes. I guess it is pretty simple to just show up to meetings and sign off on being there without actually doing anything. And yes, you're right, Key Club looks AMAZING on college apps, but it isn't worth much of anything if you don't get your hours certified (because you probably don't have many).

7.) You have no idea who your LTG or Club President is.

6.) You've been to a DTE, but you have no idea what it actually means.

DTE- otherwise known as Dance to Eliminate was one of the PNW's ways to fund raise for the Eliminate Project, which helped to find a cure for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Thanks for at least showing up though.

5.) You went to DCON but sat in the hall during all of the sessions.

Okay let me get this straight. We're all probably guilty of this for at least one session (or at least most of us have). But what's the point of going to DCON if you aren't going to listen to to the incredible speakers they hire with your convention money?

4.) You have no idea what the Key Club chant is.

3.) You Stop Showing up to Events in the Summer.

This one is actually a painfully apparent sign that you need to become more involved in Key Club. When school ends, service and caring shouldn't stop! Some of the best service events and opportunities are presented to Key Clubbers in the Summer months.

2.) You Love Service but don't have "the time".

This is one of the saddest reasons I hear for why people don't join Key Club. Believe it or not, some of the busiest people I know- student leadership members, musicians, etc.- are involved with Key Club.

Some of the events start at 4am and others end at midnight, whether you're busy on weekdays or weekends, almost anyone can make time in their schedule to be involved in Key Club. One of my favorites quotes says, "No one is ever too busy, it's all about priorities." So, make it your mission to prioritize service!

1.) Your favorite Key Club Friends Graduated

This can be a big one for some people. Whether you're going into your Junior or Senior year, sometimes it's hard to keep going to a club your friend got you into without them.

My best advice is to fill their shoes and bring your underclassmen friends into Key Club, who knows? Maybe you'll end up inviting a future officer or LTG.
