I gave it the down vote, and I stand by it. You should too, Frederica, because many people from AA will judge you just as harshly, telling you what you need to do and how you’re doing it wrong if it’s not through AA. The hubris of AA and smug, all-knowing people like this create the dogma of a normally beautiful program. They can’t tolerate the possibility of someone drinking in moderation or doing it without AA. They are too insecure about what that means for themselves if someone else can and they can’t. I admit, it doesn’t sound good for the writer of this article, but who are we to predict the future, and Richardom should know better… As a member of AA we share our story and keep our side of the street clean, not judge someone else who is being honest and take their inventory for them unsolicited. He is not asking for Richardon’s opinion. He says very clearly that he is content with where he is at now. People like Richardom absolutely do nothing to help newcomers in AA. They make it so gross. Nobody knows everything, AA does not have the market cornered on sobriety, and abstinence is not the only approach, as many people outside of AA, such as scientists, know. It’s one of many. As people in AA should know, we are not God. We don’t label someone as an alcoholic, only the author of this article can do that. For himself.

Richardom- We don’t tell others they have a problem. Thats for them to figure out. We tell our story like this man honestly told his and reserve judgement. Keep your side of the street clean and find me in the book where this is an AA-like response instead of an insecure, smug, know-it-all AA response that turns many people off. The rigidity is not good. You can’t handle the possibility of this man having a decent life with alcohol because you couldn’t. But he might. We don’t know.

Yes, to AArs this sounds very much like rationalization. But AA and the abstinence approach do not have the market cornered on a happy life. The fact is WE DON’T KNOW HOW IT WILL TURN OUT FOR THIS GENTLEMAN. You can guess, because of your own stories, and a bunch of other people’s stories in the rooms who share your exact view point, but many people find moderation all of the time. I’m not sure this man is going to be one of them, but I don’t know the future. I do believe addiction progressive, so he’ll find out soon enough. It’s so sad how some AA people almost love the self-righteous knowitall sayings and predicting the failures of others. Because if this man does it, and is happy, what does it mean for them and the whole world they’ve built on this program? The truth is nobody knows. It makes me concernd for him the way he describes it, and we’ve all heard stories like his, but most of us hang with people who’ve had the exact same ending, so that’s all we know.
