13 Reasons Why An Indian Family Get-Together Is Painful

Growing up, going to family gatherings starts to become a huge burden simply because there are a lot more important things to do (like watch Dean and Sam exorcise demons on TV). And although I’m in my early twenties, I’ve started to skip out on such get-togethers (except my immediate family) because of the people I meet and the things they say. Some of these things you hear and you wish you never knew those people.

    1. "You don’t text or call. What? You’ve become so busy? You should still keep in touch”

    2. “God! You’ve changed so much. You used to be such a sweetheart”

    3. “Which college are you going to that you’re so busy?”

    4. “You should learn to enjoy. This is the only time to live life.”

    5. “(Bragging) When I was in college, I went to so many fests. Every teacher still knows my name”

    6. “What exam do you have now? Why?”

    7. “How much will you study? No one will think that you’re my brother/sister”

    8. “What course are you doing?”

    9. “If you're (busy) like this now, what will happen when my ‘bhabhi’/’jiju’ comes home?”

    10. “Ugh! So much money they've spent on their wedding but they couldn't get some decent food also”

    11. “What is your friend doing?” (Insert job title and organization) “How much is he/she earning?” (Insert amount) “Wow! He/she is already earning so much as a starting salary. Why do you even want to do (insert course name)”

    12. “When are you calling us home for your wedding?”

    13. "Fandom? What's that?"
