    Fun fact: It is possible to eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes processed and packaged foods.

    The key is to know how to choose the healthiest options from what's available. And btw, BuzzFeed Health reported on how to eat healthier processed foods here.

    Here is the criteria we considered when choosing items for this list:

    • Calories per serving

    • Reasonability of serving size

    • Ratio of carbs to fiber (ideally no more than 10 grams of carb for every 1 gram of fiber)

    • Ratio of protein to fat (ideally no less than 2 grams of protein for every 1 grams of fat)

    • Amount of added sugar

    • Amount of sodium

    • Number of ingredients (the fewer, the better)

    • Recognizability of ingredients (the more familiar/pronounceable, the better)

    And some items were specially chosen by our experts: registered dietitians Jessica Jones, of Food Heaven Made Easy and co-author of 28-Day Plant-Powered Health Reboot, and Abby Langer of Abby Langer Nutrition.
