31 Ways To Help You Redesign Your Home On A Budget

Because we are absolutely not going broke just to upgrade our homes.

    1. Give your stairs a major upgrade by using a set of removable tile decals. They come in a roll just like tape, so you slap them on your risers and — boom! — you're done.

The stair decals are shown installed on a flight of stairs; the decals are shown in a roll

    2. Antique and vintage mirrors are timeless, but unfortunately they can be really expensive. Try this antique-inspired mirror that's less than $20. It's super lightweight because it's plastic, so no need for heavy-duty hardware when it comes to hanging it — some folks just use tape.

    3. Create a gallery wall with a set of eight framed pieces of art in various sizes. The themed art will create a cohesive look without being too matchy. Bonus: This kit comes with a sheet of paper that shows popular layout options, so you don't have to spend hours going "OK, so where should THIS one go?!??!?!"

    4. If you have a bathroom with outdated cabinet pulls or knobs, consider swapping them out for something that's on trend yet timeless, like these black matte-steel cabinet pulls. If you rent, simply put the old ones in a shoebox or bag under the sink so you can swap them back in when it's time to move out.

    5. Install a macramé hanging shelf to house all your plants and curiosities without having to build an entire bookshelf. Because it's so lightweight, all you need are a couple of S hooks to hang it from your ceiling.

Reviewer's hanging shelves house small nicknames like crystals, plants, and figurines

    6. Easily install LED lights around or behind your mirror, because doing your makeup with only a ceiling light shining down at you can cast some pretty unnatural shadows that makes makeup application tricky. A smart–touch dimmer lets you adjust brightness, too, so you can get glammed up even if your room is slightly dark.

    7. Or if your kitchen or bathroom doesn't get enough task lighting, try an under-cabinet lighting kit. These are great because they just tape onto the bottom of your cabinets, which means they're out of sight. They're also remote controlled and have a dimmer and a timer, so you can set them to stay on and automatically turn off after 30 minutes, three hours, whatever!

    8. Use peel-and-stick removable wallpaper to create a faux reclaimed wood accent wall for a fraction of the price of installing costly real wood. Simply cut the paper to your wall's size and stick on. It's really that easy.

    9. A big part of interior design — especially if you don't want to break the bank — is to incorporate a lot of wonderful houseplants into your space. If that's intimidating because you have a hard time keeping plant babies alive, try a pack of food spikes for fertilizing every type of flowering and foliage houseplant you have. Each stick provides up to two months of food for your plants, which eliminates the need to constantly fertilize and check the soil for nutrients.

    10. And keep your plants happy and healthy by using a trio of self-watering cat globes for those of us who are either chronic overwaterers or constantly traveling. Each bulb provides water for your plants for up to three weeks, depending on your climate.

    11. Want the look of luxury without the hefty price tag? Try some dining chairs that are upholstered in PU leather — aka artificial leather. PU Leather is actually a wonderful material for dining chair upholstery as it doesn't stain nearly as easily as traditional leather and can be cleaned with way more common household products.

    12. Want to party but stuck at home? This color-changing showerhead will create that vibe without you having to pay an entrance fee. DJ booth not included.

    13. If you need a nightstand but don't necessarily want or need to spend big bucks on a traditional one, consider this metal end table with a charcoal-gray top that's big enough for storing all your bedside essentials. The tabletop has a lip that curves upward around the edge, so if you ever spill snacks or liquids it won't make a mess on the floor.

    14. Unsightly shower enclosure or bathtub got you down? Cover it up with a gorgeous shower curtain designed by Justina Blakeney, the bona fide queen of the bohemian interior design style that's all the rage right now.

    15. Are you short on storage? Keep your best and most-used products within reach with a space-saving shower curtain that has nine generously sized mesh storage pockets.

    16. If soggy bath mats are absolutely not your thing (we hear you) consider a bamboo bath mat. It even has little rubber feet that prevent it from moving around.

    17. Add a peel-and-stick subway tile backsplash to your kitchen to create a more finished look. These are extra great if you're a renter — they don't damage the wall at all if you ever need to remove them.

    18. Or if you want a peel-and-stick backsplash that has more of a wow factor, use this one that mimics Talavera Mexican tile.

    19. A lot of us are still working from home, but that doesn't necessarily mean we all of the sudden have the space for a home office. Try this small writing desk with a side pocket for getting tasks done without taking up too much space. There are nine wood finishes available, but this particular brown gives it an expensive reclaimed-wood look.

    20. Lighting is so important to good design, and this pack of three battery-powered stick-anywhere lights will illuminate those tough areas like closets, drawers, and staircases that otherwise become dark corners of your home. Each light has a motion sensor, so they will turn on when you're near them and off when you're not.

    21. Ugly bathroom floor got you down? Instead of trying to permanently fix it (which can cost thousands!) try a vinyl mat that'll look like tile on your floor. This one's antifungal, hypoallergenic, thermal insulated, and 100% recyclable.

    22. A well organized fridge is such a feast for the eyes, and this set of fridge organization labels that have a ton of font, size, and color options is the perfect way to achieve that look. Imagine opening your fridge and everything is exactly where it's supposed to be. Ommmmmmmmm.

    23. Use a special shelf for books that — thanks to unique hardware — literally makes it look like your books are floating on the wall. An easy and very cool way to show off your favorite pieces of literature.

    24. Tired of opening your drawers to grab some socks or undies, only to find a giant pile of indiscernible fabrics? Try an underwear and sock divider insert because you deserve to open a drawer and actually see what your options are instead of feeling like you're staring into the abyss.

    25. If you want your bathroom to have the look of a swanky hotel bathroom or spa, consider these stainless-steel and glass soap dispensers that look expensive but are actually quite reasonably priced. The uniform look will make your bathing experience feel so fancy.

    26. Houseplants are such a mood, but often times they can take up a lot of floor space. If you're short on space, this vertical plant stand can hold six medium-sized plants.

    27. Messy bed got you down? Upgrade your bedding situation with a set of buttery soft microfiber sheets. The thread count is 1,800, which means you'll feel like you're floating on a cloud every time you plop onto your bed. Even better: They're wrinkle, moisture, and fade resistant.

    28. We know that wallpaper is for, well, walls, but who says you can't do more with it? A budget-friendly DIY project is to update old furniture with wallpaper, like this toile peel-and-stick wallpaper with a country-life theme.

    29. Lack of whimsical mood lighting got you down? Try this string of rechargeable fairy lights so your luminous decor ambitions are no longer limited by outlet locations and the desire to not spend your life's savings on batteries.

    30. If your kitchen is lacking in both cabinet and counter storage, consider this freestanding kitchen workstation. It has five shelves, 10 hooks (perfect for hanging those large and awkwardly shaped tools that take up waaay too much drawer space), a spice organizer, and a basket.

    31. Add a soft touch to your bedroom without investing in a completely upholstered (and therefore more expensive) bed frame. This tufted headboard will give you look and the comfort without needing to spend bookoo bucks.
