Turn Down For What?!
S2SD attended a convention in January and a competition in March where the volume of the music at both events were causing a common disturbance: dancers covering their ears and dance siblings being removed by concerned parents. This prompted us to ask the question: when is loud music moving from pumping you up to increasing risk of hearing impairment due to damage? We asked our specialist this important question. Stephanie Loder isn't just an audiologist but is a former dancer and dance instructor from Nova Scotia, where she taught children’s classes for several years. She has since discovered her passion for health care and preserving quality of life in individuals with hearing disorders. She currently works with Hearing Solutions as an Audiologist in Ottawa, Ontario where she enjoys helping patients keep their hearing at it’s best.

No Food Waste Courtmay Challenge: Pits, Bones, Shells
A successful start to my Courtmay Challenge of sending no food waste to landfill. A tough challenge to power through with family staying, a big baptism party, several birthday celebrations, and what’s more, a delicious Mother’s Day dinner of lobster and oysters! But I love crushing goals so consider this month compost gravy. Challenge within a challenge: Avocado Pits What to do with this deliciously fatty fruit that we eat every day? I recently learned that the pits of avocadoes are nutritious so I’ve collected them in a mason jar and placed it in a sunny window to dry the pits until I use the oven. I tossed them on a pan to roast for 10 minutes. The skins flake off the pits into the compost and I tossed the pits into my Vitamix and pulverized them. The resulting gritty powder is great in soup, perfect for baby food, and disguises well in shakes. Next challenge: Shells & Bones In addition to being a frugal new mom, I also believe that bone broth is good for one’s health. I get at least 3 meals from chicken wings: chicken bouillon when I gently boil wings before coating, sitting, then BBQ’ing; the actual chicken wing meal; and the flavoured bouillon of the roasted bones. Every bone that comes in this house gets turned into bouillon. I was not sure what to do with the bones post-boil so I put it to Facebook – a former dance student suggested I bury them in the garden for added calcium for the plants. Brilliant! So after picking every striation of lobster meat from my Mother’s Day dinner, I buried the lobster and 24 oyster shells (that I had no problems finishing all by myself) deep in the ground on top of which a Japanese Maple was recently planted. Thanks, Facebook and thanks, Matt Lukeman! Final Challenge: Frozen Composter, Vitamix Delight I went out with a full bucket ready to compost and discovered that things take longer than expected to thaw in Canada – particularly if it’s in the shade. So after several failed attempts at opening the composter I hauled out my trusty Vitamix again and started with some water, then added some food waste, a little more water, then blasted that food waste on high for 30 seconds. The result was a thick sludge with traces of coffee grinds and speckled white with broken eggshells. I marched that stinky canister straight out to the garden and dumped it on top of the greens I had planted. This Vitamix method is simple and blending the food waste makes it so easy to spread on the garden (and reduces decomposition time) but consider yourself warned: the smell of old onions, wilted leftover salad, and dangerously old quinoa is anything but pleasing in the olfactory sense! Therefore, use this method on outdoor gardens, not indoor plants like yours truly admittedly tried. Got any ideas to share? Use #CourtmayChallenge in your media posts or message me directly!

No Food Waste Courtmay Challenge
Courtmay, you say? My husband calls it Courtmay because it is my birthday month (for those of you who didn’t know, my birth name is Courtney AND my birthday is an entire month long). Courtmay will be a busy month: Baby’s baptism, dance recital, my birthday, confirmation, Mother’s Day, anniversary, oh and it’s generally the month when the weather in Canada ceases to be the leading cause of wrist slitting among Canadians. As though I didn’t have enough on my plate with a crawling baby, two step kids, and a half acre needing tending, I thought I’d take on the added challenge of finding clever ways of eliminating food waste from our household for an entire month AND blog about it! Inspiration for this Courtmay Challenge came to me while standing in my kitchen joking with my husband about what I would use the leftover bone broth for: soup or quinoa? What other households would call food waste we call rocket fuel because I can turn old bones, coffee grinds, and old salad (the latter of which is the most disgusting food I can imagine being forced to eat) into fuel to get to the moon. With a baby endeavouring to try solid foods and step kids with expensive and exotic food tastes, there will be no shortage of challenges to find ways to use lobster shells, pits of all fruits, and even food waste brought home in lunch boxes because the school will not pay for garbage collection from student’s food waste (this is actually great because I can monitor what my kids are eating/not eating at school AND manage the waste in my environmentally, socially conscious ways). So, you may now ask: “what does this have to do with dance?” and to that I will explain that dancers eat (despite common misperceptions), dancers are socially and environmentally conscious citizens of the world, and dancers are creative by nature. One way I seek to feed (pun intended) my mind, body, soul is through those three means. I believe I can continue to eat delicious and exotic food while challenging myself to act in socially and environmentally conscious ways both in growing or purchasing food and in finding creative means of keeping food waste from landfill. Further, it’s important to have interests outside of the studio! Two of my favourite things are growing food and eating food. With a budding garden I’m pumped, not only to eliminate food waste in the month of May, but to increase the amount of money I save by growing my own food. So far I have the beginnings of kale, spinach, arugula, radishes, okra, mesclun greens, lettuce, and chard in a raised bed sheltered from the frost. Inside I have squash, melons, herbs of all kinds in a greenhouse and even the beginnings of apple trees and lemon trees which will stay in pots to bring inside in fall. I also have a wide mixture of flowers to attract bees and promote the pollination of my garden. Recently, I attended a workshop on bees and beekeeping that helped me plan my garden to help save the bees from neonicotinoid pesticides that are threatening their existence and therefore threatening our food supply (since up to 70% of our food depends on bee pollination). The final aspect of my Courtmay Challenge is to enroll YOU in joining this challenge. Dance Is For EveryBODY
Those who have not grown up in the dance world could be under the impressions that dance is an exclusive and elite physical art form reserved only for those of a certain [petite] stature. But those of us who are long time addicts and those of us that have had the magical experience of teaching dance, especially to children, understand that dance is for every body.
