WWE Used A Photo Of Auschwitz To Promote WrestleMania And The Auschwitz Memorial Responded

The WWE has issued an apology.

This week, WWE released a Wrestlemania promotional clip for the upcoming Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio match.

So WWE used footage of Auschwitz in the Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio video package that aired on its pre-show. Relevant shot is at about the 15-second mark. What an unforced error that is.

In the skit, Dominik said, “You think this is a game to me? I served hard time. And I survived.”

The clip then cut to a photo of barbed wire and a photo of Auschwitz.

    Auschwitz

Auschwitz was the biggest German Nazi concentration camp, where over one million people were senselessly killed during the Holocaust. So it kinda goes without saying that you don't use it as a way to create a type of aesthetic for WrestleMania.

This obviously drew backlash on social media:

Hang on, apparently WWE used footage of AUSCHWITZ to depict when Dominik Mysterio went to jail? What the FUCK? #WrestleMania

WWE apologized with this statement provided to NBC News. "We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately. We apologize for this error."

The official Auschwitz Memorial Twitter account responded, saying, "The fact that an Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to call 'an editing mistake.'"

The fact that Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to call "an editing mistake". Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz. https://t.co/b4bbYgWPwj https://t.co/Xud4rbhEUS
