I'm sure you're familiar with Miley Cyrus and her music.
Miley Cyrus began with her Disney music as Hannah Montana, and then explored pop as she got older.
But her 2013 album Bangerz heavily leaned into a hip-hop sound, which she was quick to be criticized for.
After Bangerz, Miley's experimental LP called Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz had no hip hop influence."
In a 2017 interview, Miley drew criticism after she said hip hop was too lewd for her. "I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little."
Now, after Miley's latest EP She Is Coming featured hip hop again, fan and YouTuber As Told By Kenya explained why she loves Miley and her music, but grapples with her former insensitive comments on hip hop and her past of appropriation.

In the video, Kenya defended Miley but said her comment about rap music was insensitive at the time. "It was not ok."
Well, Miley saw Kenya's video and commented on it, apologizing for dipping in and out of hip hop.
"Being silent is not like me at all. I am aware of my platform and have always used it the best way I know how and to shine a light on injustice," she said. "I want to start with saying I am sorry. I own the fact that saying 'This pushed me out of the hip hop scene a little' was insensitive, as it is a privilege to have the ability to dip in and out of 'the scene.'"
"There are decades of inequality that I am aware of, but still have a lot learn about. Silence is a part of the problem and I refuse to be quiet anymore. My words became a divider in a time where togetherness and unity is crucial."
"I can not change what I said at that time, but I can say I am deeply sorry for the disconnect my words caused. Simply said: I fucked up and I sincerely apologize. I’m committed to using my voice for healing, change, and standing up for what’s right. Miley."
