Many Black people wear bonnets to maintain moisture in their hair and prevent hair from frizzing. According to Allure, there's been debate in the Black community about wearing them in public settings.
In 2021, comedian Mo'Nique made a controversial video urging Black women to stop wearing their bonnets in public. "I wanna make sure I'm not saying it in judgment, and I wanna make sure I'm saying it from a place of love," she said. "Y'all, some of y'all have given me the title of 'auntie.'" Mo then said she's been seeing a lot of Black women with "head bonnets, scarves, slippers, pajamas, [and] blankets wrapped around them" in public.
"if i see a bunch of white kids walking around with bonnets on jack harlow will have to answer for his crimes," one person said.
