The demolition of Greystone will be an event universally regretted by future generations. What we have, sitting abandoned in New Jersey, is a historical gem - Something to be celebrated, not destroyed.

Simply put - the exterior of this building is quite beautiful. A columned entrance, adorned in carved stonework, and crowned with a slightly depressed looking cupola. It exhibits a presence that is quite impressive, even after having been left abandoned for several years. Unfortunately, this is all a charade – its intriguing form is nothing more than a disturbed siren's song, heralded to entice photographers, urban explorers, and other curiosity seekers into its toxic maw.
At the crest of a hilltop in Essex County, NJ, can be found an imposing brick form known as the the Essex County Isolation Hospital. It has held this lofty position above the town since it was first constructed over 80 years ago, in 1932. Unlike the past three-fourths of a century however, the massive wings of this 200,000 square foot tower now sit empty and silent, save for the low howl of the wind as it continuously runs over the high corners of the wards...
This ivy-wrapped sanatorium began its life over 100 years ago as tuberculosis treatment facility. It operated as such into the 1950's, at which point the discovery of streptomycin made the treatment of the disease much easier, and subsequently negated the need for full-fledged TB facilities. Like many other TB centers throughout the country, this sanatorium then saw itself re-purposed as a psychiatric hospital in the years following. Though the building which we filmed has long since been left to rot, the entirety of the campus itself was only recently, and controversially, shuttered.
There is no color here, not in the dead of winter. All has turned to a sea of white, flowing endlessly outward through ashen-barked trees until it meets with the pale sky. There is, however, a singular holdout in these otherwise colorless surroundings - The deep red brick of the Rolling Hills asylum...
