The college experience is far too nuanced, thrilling and terrifying to possibly be understood though a simple guide from a recent graduate. But here's one anyway.

1. Focusing too much on your GPA

You can write a glowing English paper about themes of death in Eliot's poetry, but potential employers often want to see how your good grades translate into practical business skills. I'm not suggesting you blow of studying to go to that networking event, but still, connections count. Because the world is unfair sometimes.

2. Worrying You're Not Socializing Enough

A lot of the time, college can feel like a 24/7 camp for adults. But you do not have to be seen with at least one friend at all times. If it looks like everyone is having a blast except for you – then you’re wrong. Relax and enjoy time by yourself.

3. Signing Up For "Safe" Classes

You deserve a break after high school, right? Nope, sorry. You can’t avoid the challenging courses forever - so don't save them all for your senior year. Plus, you’ll probably find that you get more satisfaction out of classes that actually require you to stay awake.

4. Staying On Campus

Study abroad. Go somewhere different, somewhere challenging, somewhere that will force you to really know yourself and what you’re capable of. You really can’t go wrong, as most countries have drinking age of 18.

5. Failing To Decide Who Your Real Friends Are

College (and life) is too short to spend with the wrong people. At the risk of sounding like a patronizing guidance counselor, don’t worry about fitting in with “the cool kids.” Chances are, you’ll end up with your own group of cool kids – even if you’re the only ones who think so.

6. Missing Out On Free Time

College often makes you feel busy beyond your capacity, but you'll most likely never have this much free time again. If you really want college to be "the time of your life" - make sure you save some time to have a life.
