8 Things You Didn't Know About Bethel's Founder

John Alexis Edgren was actually the most interesting man in the world.

    1. He became a sailor at the age of 13

    2. He showed talent for drawing in his earliest years. For relaxation, he would shut himself in his study for a day or two and make a drawing of the sea--to this day, these paintings have been admired by modern painters.

    3. He served as Captain in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, where he was the Commander of five different Union ships.

    4. He was a noted author who wrote 20 books on various theological topics.

    5. When asked how many languages Edgren knew, he replied, "16 spoken and 16 unspoken," These included Hebrew, Greek, Syriac, and Arabic.

    6. He founded Baptist Union Theological Seminary in 1871 in Chicago, IL (which became Bethel University). The seminary trained pastors to serve Swedish Baptist immigrants, fleeing religious persecution in Europe.

    7. He was considered to be one of the foremost authorities on Egyptology in his day.

    8. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior during a particularly terrifying storm while on a Voyage to America.
