4. Safety goggles, waterproof apron and earplugs.

Steps for Polishing Counter top.

A stone polisher connects to a water hose for water supply required for wet polishing. Wet polishing is a preferred method for the best granite polishing pads results. The rubber backing pads particularly make polishing process faster by quick connect and release of pads. An operating speed below 4500 rpm and a good quality diamond pads result in a professional quality shining finish.


Step 1 – Wear Safety Gears

• Wear safety gears to protect your nose/lungs, eyes, hand, and legs. Do wear safety goggles, nose mask, ear plugs, hand gloves, insulated shoes, and a water proof apron. It does pay back.


Step 2 – Clean and Clamp Countertop

• Clean the counter top with water or damp cloth to remove any dust or debris on the surface. Clamp the counter top on a workbench using clamps. This is important to clamp it tight.

• A loose or unclasped stone would move during the polishing process. It results into black swirling marks on a stone.

• Always use clamps with soft prongs such as rubber, cloth. If you don't have one then do insert a small piece of wood between the clamp and the counter top. Tighten the clamp, and make sure that the tile or stone is stationery.

• Allow for 2 - 3 inches of the counter top to hang outward. It gives enough room for the polishing process.

• If the counter top has more than 2 MM deep dings or holes, you need to fill the void with slurry. You can find matching color slurry for the counter top.


Step 3 – Connect Backing Pads to Polisher

• Connect the rubber backing pads to wet polisher or variable speed grinder polisher. To connect, rotate it clockwise. Tighten the thread with a hand only, don’t use a tool to over tighten it.


• Connect the lowest grit polishing pad, the grit 50 on the Velcro of the backing pad.


Step 4 – Start Polishing Using Coarsest Grit

• Start the wet polisher at low speed. Start polishing moving the polisher to and fro away from your body.

• Keep the polishing pads flat on the surface while polishing. Ensure to cover entire surface area to polish.

• Always polish the surface with uniform pressure and keep the polisher moving. A variation in pressure or static polisher may result uneven polishing. It can also result into possible cuts or dings.

• After finishing even polishing entire surface, move to the next higher grit 100.


Step 5 – Move to Higher Grit Till 3000/Buff

• Follow the exact step of polishing as used in grit 50 for all the grit one by one. The grits to use in the same order is grit 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000 and Buff.

• At the end of each grit polishing, ensure that entire surface is polished well.
• Most of the stones show shine at the end of a grit 800 or 1500.
• At the end of grit 3000 polishing, it reveals high gloss.
• After finishing polishing, let the counter top dry. Do apply a suitable sealer to preserve the polish and beauty of the counter top.
