    Jackyl Frontman, And Owner Of Jesse James Bourbon, Fights Whiskey Labeling Law

    Music fans know him as the frontman of Jackyl, TV viewers know him as the star of Full Throttle Saloon, and whiskey drinkers know he’s the proud owner of Jesse James Bourbon. Last week, though, Jesse James Dupree wore yet another hat when he appeared before Tennessee state senators at a committee hearing, urging them to repeal the Tennessee Whiskey Labeling Law. Here’s the back story: Dupree and his partner, Michael Ballard, make their whiskey in Kentucky. They’ve purchased a large plot of land in Trimble, Tennessee, and intend to move Jesse James Bourbon’s distillery there — creating many jobs and boosting the local economy — and to brand it “Tennessee whiskey.” Late last year, though, the Jack Daniels company pushed the Tennessee state legislature to enact the Tennessee Whiskey Labeling Law, which states that in order for a spirit to be called “Tennessee whiskey,” it has to be made using certain methods — not coincidentally, exactly the methods through which Jack Daniels is made — and no other.
