Which Of Jon Snow's Avengers Will Die In The Next "Game Of Thrones"?

After years and years of keeping major characters apart, Game of Thrones Season 7 has very much been about bringing people ~together~.

From Sansa, Arya, and Bran, to Jon and Dany, from Jorah and Sam, to Jon and Drogon! All of these characters who were once thousands of miles apart are now right on top of each other and totally BFFs. Ish.

The culmination of this, of course, occurred at the end of Episode 5, when Jon, Tormund, Jorah, Beric, Thoros, Gendry and the Hound formed the greatest boy band in history and stepped out beyond the Wall as the credits rolled.

The Avengers. The Suicide Squad. The A Team. S Club 7. Whatever you want to call them, it is quite clear some shit is going to go down next week. Mostly because trying to catch a wight is a FUCKING STUPID IDEA.

But also because the trailer clearly showed some shit going down.

Considering how close we are to the end, we've got off relatively lightly regarding major characters kicking the bucket in Season 7. But with Jon leading his squad right into the zombie horde, it seems likely that this run might be about to come to an end.

With that in mind, let's look at how likely it is that each of Jon's Avengers will make it out alive. Up first...

Jon Snow

Argument for him living: Put simply? Impenetrable plot armour. This whole thing is clearly about him above any other character. Death can't stop him, so we don't fancy the Night King's chances, either.

Argument for him dying: There's a theory kicking around that Jon will die as a result of their little trip north, but that – once again – he'll be brought back, this time by Thoros of Myr, who conveniently loves a bit of resurrection before breakfast. More on this later.

Jorah Mormont

Argument for him living: The writers gave Jorah a gross, degenerative disease for two whole seasons, before making him go through the most painful and disgusting curing process you've ever seen in order to get back to his queen. Killing him off in the very next episode would be a MASSIVE dick move. Right?

Argument for him dying: It would be very Jorah to have such bad luck.

Tormund Giantsbane

Argument for him living: Tormund, or Ginger Spice, is the only member of the gang who truly knows the terrain. If anyone is capable of surviving out here, surely it's the wildling?

Argument for him dying: Tormund's arc has been one of the best in the show for my money, and the bond he forged with Jon is – against all odds – as strong as any we've seen. They are more than happy to die for each other. Jon did. That said, I have a very, very bad feeling that Tormund's journey has come to an end. Will he return the favour, and die to save Jon?

Beric Dondarrion

Argument for him living: As with Jon, death can't stop this dude. He's died a whole bunch of times and is still here, with his very convenient flaming sword (wights hate fire). He is a walking embodiment of Chumbawamba's greatest work.

Argument for him dying: Even cats only get nine lives – how long before he pushes his luck? In the books Beric sacrifices himself to bring back Catelyn Stark; the show obviously went a very different route, but perhaps he could do the same if Jon were to fall in battle? If he's being brought back each time so that he could die at the proper moment (™ Severus Snape), maybe now is his time?

Thoros of Myr

Argument for him living: As discussed, both Jon and Beric have found the services of the Lord of Light to be very useful. With Mel gone, Thoros has to stick around in case anyone needs a touch of fiery CPR.

Argument for him dying: Karmic retribution for that fucking top knot.

Gendry

Argument for him living: Game of Thrones frequently likes to remind us that ~no one is safe~. Anyone can die, at any time. But if Gendry were to go AWOL for three and a half seasons, only to die in LITERALLY THE NEXT EPISODE after his return, you'd really have to ask what the point of bringing him back was.

Argument for him dying: The answer to that very question, however, could be "just so Ser Davos could make that stupid fan-service-y joke about him still rowing". In which case, hammertime might be over before it really began.

The Hound

Argument for him living: Because how the fuck is Cleganebowl meant to happen if he dies?! **AIRHORNS**

Argument for him dying: Sandor Clegane has been on quite the journey. For the first time in his life he's thinking about other people before himself. He saw what was coming in the flames, and he's heading straight for it regardless. Would a noble death for an ultimately noble man be the worst thing?

BUT WAIT...

Before Season 7 started, HBO dropped a trailer that included this fleeting and hard-to-decipher shot. A tall, long-haired man draws his sword in what appears to be the sunny south. This could be anyone – not least Jon Snow – but like many others I'm nailing my colours to the mast and saying this is the Hound.

If it is, this means two things. Firstly, that he must survive whatever he's heading into in Episode 6. And secondly, that after he does, he travels back down south. Does this mean their attempt to grab a wight is successful? And that they somehow manage to take it down to King's Landing to show Cersei?

And – if you believe everything up to this point – could he be drawing his sword because he's about to fight his giant zombie big brother?! I'm not one to get carried away, but... 🚨🚨🚨 **ENDLESS AIRHORNS** 🚨🚨🚨
