It was slightly confusing, but to put it in simpler terms...a lot of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff went down.

Back in February 2008 (!!!) someone on the asoiaf.westeros.org forum responded to a thread called "What does Hodor mean?" with the following suggestion:

OK, so they were clearly sort of joking, but eight years before the show revealed the answer (and three years before the show even started) that's a pretty impressive prediction.
