WHEELER GEOLOGICAL AREA - YES, THIS IS IN COLORADO

Wheeler Geological Area is an incredible formation of eroded volcanic ash that has left behind a landscape that looks almost extra-terrestrial. The phenomenon is so amazing that this area was actually designated as Colorado’s first National Monument in 1908.

If you're ready to get off the beaten path and see an incredible site few people have ever viewed, then you may be up for camping near Wheeler Geological Area. Wheeler Geological Area is an incredible formation of eroded volcanic ash that has left behind a landscape that looks almost extra-terrestrial. The phenomenon is so amazing that this area was actually designated as Colorado's first National Monument in 1908. Its designation as a National Monument was removed in 1950 because it is so remote and difficult to get to. Hidden inside the Rio Grande National Forest, about 10 miles East of Creede, Colorado is one of the most unbelievable secret gems in the state, the Wheeler Geological Area. (Creede, CO is a four and a half hour drive South East of Denver.)

Of course, its remote location is where the adventure comes in, if you want to see the amazing volcanic spires of the Wheeler Geological Area you will have to take a seven mile hike on East Bellows Trail. The only other way to get to this fascinating area is to take a 14 mile 4-Wheel drive trail, but the 14 mile ride can easily take about three hours to drive because it is such a rough road. You can find many great camping spots along the East Bellows Trail, but there is no camping allowed inside the Wheeler Geological Area itself, where campfires are prohibited.

Camping is allowed in designated areas. Hanson's Mill at the base of East Bellows Trail Head #790 offers restrooms, picnic tables and primitive camping spots. So, if you want to be sure to have restroom access this is a great place to pitch your tent. This is also a great place to camp if you are camping with horses, as there is plenty of room for a horse trailer at the parking lot at the trail head. If you're willing to have a more rugged camping experience, you can continue up the trail with your back packs and supplies and find some great camping spots.

To get to the East Bellows Trail Head you will take Colorado 149 for seven miles south east of Creede, then turn right onto Pool Table Road and continue for about 10 miles until you arrive at Hanson's Mill. All two wheel drive vehicles must stop at Hanson's Mill, (the trail head for East Bellows Trail) but those who are up for a long and difficult 4-wheel drive can continue North and drive up to within 1/2 mile of the formations.

Before you go, read the interesting history of this landmark and whatever you do, don't forget to pack your camera. Few others who love camping in Colorado will ever discover something quite like the amazing, hidden volcanic formation at the Wheeler Geologic Area.
