    Writing Routine

It is important to find the right routine; find a writing routine that fits into your life. Writing is not one size fits all. Experiment and figure out what works best for you.

    Find Your Routine

I have always been a strong supporter of the writing routine. For the longest time I forced myself to write at least 1,000 words every day. I looked at it the way a person might look at lifting weights. But there was one thing I never took into account: Rest. Like with exercise, muscles need to rest in order to gain the full benefits from fitness. By forcing myself to write daily, I may have stunted some writing growth.

As the internet now knows (because I promoted it like crazy), I completed a one week book challenge not too long ago. What this challenge taught me, as a writer, was that a person does not need to force him/herself to write daily in order to be productive. They just need to be productive when they write. I know that sounds ridiculously simple, so I will elaborate. Instead of having a daily goal, I have found that having a weekly goal is far more effective. Because some days, reading in the sun and relaxing with family does more good than stressing about reaching a word count. A weekly goal is not only more flexible than a daily goal, but potentially more productive. For example, as I mentioned before, my daily goal was 1,000 words. So I only wrote about 7,000 words a week. Since switching over to a weekly goal, I write about 10,000 words a week. Because when I fully dedicate myself to writing, I knock out around 3,000 words per session.

Not only am I being more productive, and efficient, with my writing but I am also finding more time to read, and work out (like a normal person).

It is important to find a writing routine that fits you! Try out the daily goals, the weekly goals, and whatever else you can think of. Feel free to let me know what your writing routine is. Maybe I will write a blog about it and give you a shout out.
