How Much Do You Know About France’s  First Official Refugee Camp in Dunkirk?

While the number of Dunkirk camp residents has varied greatly over time, different sources estimate the number being somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 people, most of whom were transferred to Dunkirk from several unofficial camps surrounding the area. However, the actual number of displaced people both in and around Dunkirk remains unknown, making an effective and coordinated response to the situation difficult.

Let’s start with the basics. How many refugees / displaced people are there in Dunkirk official camp?

According to a recent data collection study led by the Dunkirk Legal Support Team in spring 2016 and with support from Refugee Rights Data Project (RRDP), the vast majority (82%) of refugees / displaced people in Dunkirk come from the Kurdish region of Iraq, while the second most common country of origin is Iran. This highlights the complexity of prolonged conflict dynamics and limited social freedoms in the countries of origin that drive people to seek for safety beyond the headlines seen in our daily news.

42% of all respondents and 30% of minors surveyed by the same study reported having experienced police brutality while in France. Interestingly the study found correlation between people who have had their fingerprints taken and those who have experienced police brutality.

In total 47% of survey respondents below 18 years old reported being detained during their stay in France. The same number for all respondents (minors and adults) reached 28%.

How many minors (children below 18 years) living in Dunkirk have been detained during their stay in France?

The study found correlation between refugees’ and displaced people’s length of stay in France and their experience of police violence and detention. This indicates that the longer refugees stay in unofficial circumstances without effective protection, the more vulnerable they become to external threats and rights violations.

The lengthier the stay of refugees and displaced people in France, the more likely they are to experience police violence and detention.

28% of women respondents in the survey said they have not been able to see a doctor after moving to the camp, while 23% of women reported being pregnant and 22% being unwell.

Health status of women is of particular concern in the Dunkirk official refugee camp.

At the time of the study, 51% of minors and 28% of women residing in the camp have not been able to see a doctor during their stay in Dunkirk camp. Yet we are to see how the French government's take-over of the camp might help address this urgent need for adequate health care.

Health services are well available and easy to access for refugees and displaced people in Dunkirk.

At the time of the study, 54% of all respondents, 50% of women and 39% of minors said they do not know how to seek asylum to a country they are heading for. This raises concerns about the fulfillment of these people’s basic human rights; where a right to seek for asylum is a universal right for people fleeing conflict, persecution and discrimination of various forms.
