The Creative Olympics: 8 Ways The Online Community Adapted To The Ban On GIFs

The Rio Olympics may be over, but many fans still want to revel in team USA’s success (Phelps, Ledecky, Biles, Rollins and the 100-meter hurdle sweep). Unfortunately, we are held back from reliving many of our favorite moments because the International Olympics Committee’s rules prohibit the sharing of GIFs, Vines, and other animated platforms. In acknowledging the absurd rules, the online community has overcome their own form of hurdle - the copyright kind - and adapted with some creativity and hilarity. We rounded up some of our favorite examples:

    1. Creating a meme of the #PhelpsFace

    2. Designing your own Olympics logo

    3. Creating gifs of infographics replaying how Katie Ledecky beat her own World Record in the 400-meter freestyle

    4. A local TV anchor using footage from his high school wrestling career to report on swimming results

    5. Usain Bolt's photo finish became an instant viral sensation

    6. Using gifs from previous Olympic competitions to showcase athletes’ amazing skills

    7. Parodying Gisele Bundchen's last catwalk

    8. And, when necessary, just using GIFs that don’t involve actual coverage from the Olympics at all

say what you want about #TeamUSA's outfits - I'm digging it, including the boat shoes. #OpeningCeremony #Rio2016
