Why Ron Lindsay Is The Best Dad

Some things about my Dad-

My dad is the best. He worked more than full time as a social worker in upstate NY for almost 40 years. He served on the school board and had a couple of terms as president during a tumultuous time for the district. He raised four kids, at least one dachshund (Hi Trinka!) , a couple of cats (RIP Snowball) and some wonderful Golden Retrievers (Hi Saffron! Hi Maggie! Hi Cinny! Hi Molly!) and a whole lot of rabbits (love you Candy Cotton!). For a brief time there were also two birds. But we won’t get into that now.

He also had a sweet red two-door Toyota.

I remember riding on my Dad’s shoulders down the boardwalk of a Jersey shore beach. He was the tallest man in the world! Sometimes, he’d ask me to help weed in the garden and I would eat peas off the plant. He came to my soccer games and even though I was just terrible, he always cheered me on. He came to the plays I was in and the concerts. Even though he was super busy, he always made time for his family.

But, my Dad also helped father so many kids that needed more fathering than was offered to them. His career in social work has touched so many lives. I remember going to the facility in upstate NY that he had a huge role in creating. We were there to see a basketball game between the kids at Berkshire and an area team. It was incredible.

You know what I remember the most about growing up with my dad? Every now and then, he would take me over to Martha’s on Broadway for a hamburger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake. Martha’s was across the street so we’d walk over. It was a dive on the ground floor of a two family home and Martha, who was a widow when I met her, ran the place with little help. She did have her tiny dog, Honey. And if you went there in the afternoon, you’d be able to overhear the soap operas playing on the TV in the back room.

Dad and I would walk over and take a spot the chrome and leather barstools. Martha would take our order. For me, it was always the same. Soon after we walked in, the mint green milkshake machine would be buzzing away. I am embarrassed to say I can’t remember what Dad would order. We would eat and talk and chat with Martha and maybe grab a couple of sodas or maybe some ice cream to bring home.

Days when Dad and I went over to Martha’s? Yeah, they were the best.
