Netherlands forward Robin van Persie opened the scoring on Friday in spectacular fashion. His magical flying header served to open the floodgates on what would be an embarrassing route of defending champions Spain 5-1.
This being the fantastical internet, it didn't take long for the flying dutchman to become a meme.
Of course, there is a precedent for this. Last year, van Persie's teammate Arjen Robben got his own meme after he achieved a legendary spherical shape during the 2010 World Cup Final.
And so, the same has transpired again, with all the creativity and whimsicality that the internet can provide. Enjoy!
