What Classic '90s Bath & Body Works Scents Smell Like To Adult Women

"This reminds me of platform flip-flops and toe rings."

After I wrote about the rerelease of six classic '90s fragrances from Bath & Body Works, the company offered to send BuzzFeed Life some bottles of the old-school scents.

Cucumber Melon

Loryn: This reminds me of my neighbor's house, because this is what she wore. We would hang out and eat snacks while petting all her cats every day after school. It was a simpler time.

Alexis: My sister got a gift pack of the lotion and the body spray in Cucumber Melon and I felt very grown up spraying some on and wearing it to school in third grade.

Rachel: This reminds me of hanging out after school freshman year, waiting for cheerleading practice to start. You always had to put lotion on so your legs looked nice in those Soffe shorts.

Jess: This reminds me of every birthday party I've ever been to.

Alanna: This is vile! I used to think this was such a classy scent. It was for cool girls. It's terrible.

Emmy: Ahhh so good! Reminds me of hanging out in basements and underage drinking and summertime and going to the mall in groups of 10 people.

Kaye: This is my favorite odor in the whole world. I would straight-up eat this. I will probably buy it just to drool over it in the private shame of my bedroom.

Juniper Breeze

Sydney: I was a pretty sweaty teen... like, the slightest movement caused me to sweat. My mom would buy this for me as a not-so-subtle clue that I smelled bad. I get it, mom. Thanks. I smell better now — thank the lord.

Alanna: This reminds me of being in a locker room. Wearing a training bra.

Tracy: Juniper Breeze reminds me of the big claw-foot tub in my mom's bathroom. My mom and I bought the entire Juniper Breeze collection — lotion, shower gel, body spray. When I felt stressed out and needed to relax my freshman year of high school, I would run a full tub using the JB shower gel for bubbles and turn on Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or D'Angelo's Voodoo and sit and soak foreeeever.

Rachel: It's very...deodorant-y.

Jess: This smells like my fifth-grade friend breakup where I had another friend named Jessica and she didn’t want to go by Jessi and neither did I so we decided to stop sitting together. AKA pointless but still bitter.

Rachel S.: For me, Juniper Breeze is inextricably linked with a childhood trauma in which my brother went into my room, found a little bottle of (never used) JB body spray that someone at school had given me (as one did), and sprayed it on everything in sight. The smell lasted foreverrrrrr (days? weeks? YEARS?) and haunts me to this day.

Plumeria

Tracy: I LIIIIVED in Plumeria! It was my and my best friend's favorite scent. The first time I wanted to smell good to impress ~a boy~ this is what I would wear... It makes me think of waiting after school for my mom to come and pick me up and running to the bathroom to douse myself in the body spray before we all started congregating out front.

Monique: It smells like Claire's.

Jess: I’m surprised there’s not glitter in it.

Alexis: This reminds me of my mom. Did they have candles in this scent too? No? Makes me think of candles.

Julie: Oh, girl. This smells just like what a teenage Britney Spears fan's bedroom looks like.

Alanna: It’s like...slutty virgin. And “Plumeria” sounds like a name for your baby girl that you make up when you’re 12.

Pearberry

Rachel: This immediately takes me back to eighth grade, spending the holidays with family. I went to an Old Navy for the first time with my mom, and then she bought me Pearberry lotion at Bath & Body Works.

Emmy: High school sleepovers! I'd always pack this one when I was staying over someone's house. I think I just liked the name more than I liked the scent, because it was cute and quirky. Wtf is a pearberry, really.

Kaye: This is literally candy. This is candy in a bottle. If you put this on you your flesh would smell like Willy Wonka made it from scratch.

Alanna: I would, like, drink this.

Country Apple

Julie: As a kid, my favorite shampoo was Salon Selectives (RIP). This has the same artificial over-sweet apple scent. I miss you Salon Selectives.

Tracy: I never wore Country Apple but I used to think that that's what all white girls smelled like because it's what I'd smell when they tossed their hair.

Sydney: My grandma would buy this for my birthday or Christmas. She'd alternate between this, pajamas, and socks.

Emmy: Country Apple makes me think of disappointment. Like, if you asked someone for antibacterial hand sanitizer and they whipped out this scent, it was kinda disappointing because it was just so boring. I was a big Country Apple fan when I first got into Bath & Body Works stuff, but it got played out real fast, and I moved on to Cucumber Melon and Pearberry pretty quickly.

Rachel: This was my first Bath & Body Works fragrance and I still like it! It’s so clean and sweet. It reminds me of the spring of fourth grade, and not wanting to have ashy legs during the few weeks when we were allowed to wear shorts to school.

Augusta: I used to walk into Bath & Body Works in the mall and have my senses assaulted by all of these scents. Country Apple was definitely the one I spritzed on before going to youth group at church on Wednesday nights...back when that was considered "going out" and I could justify doing my hair, makeup, and perfume for a "night on the town."

White Tea & Ginger

Jess: This smells way too classy for what I remember. It smells like something I'd steal from a hotel.

Julie: TRÈS SOPHISTICATED! I would actually slather this on now — v. grown 'n' sexy.

Alanna: This is the only one I'd actually wear.

Emmy: I don't remember this one? Kind of smells more floral to me than gingery or tea-like. Personally not really into floral scents — not my cup of (ginger) tea. (Sorry.)

Monique: It's subtle. Bath & Body Works is not about subtle at all. They are about "smell me before I walk into a room." I don't think any 12-year-old would wear that.
