What actually causes a hangover?

Well, because alcohol affects so many parts of our body and brain, researchers aren't actually clear what exactly causes a hangover. But the main reasons for the tiredness and the headache is due to the dehydration you get from the alcohol taking all the water out of your system.

Why do we feel nauseous?

We get nauseous because our bodies don't like alcohol! Alcohol makes more alcohol in your stomach, which tells your brain that you want to throw up.

But different alcohols give different hangovers!

It's true! Drinking darker coloured alcohols, like scotch or red wine, can actually give you a stronger hangover than if you drink lighter coloured alcohols such as vodka or white wine.

This is because of the chemical that gives alcohol its colour: congeners. These are broken down as cyanide in our bodies which is poisonous!!

Every society have different and wacky ways to get rid of a hangover. But the truth is, THERE IS NO HANGOVER CURE. The only way to make the pain go away is to treat the symptoms with LOTS of water, and some good food, rest and a bit of paracetamol to treat the headache.

There was some research that suggested that pears could be a cure, but you would have to eat 1kg of them before drinking for any effect!

Sorry but no. The best way to stop a hangover is to prevent one. Alcohol affects everyone differently, and knowing your body is key. Drink in moderation, eat plenty of food before you drink, and drink LOTS of water during the night and the day after.
