The Aid Transparency Index ranks the world's largest donors according to how transparent their aid is... But why should you care?

1. We need to be able to see when aid works...and when it doesn't.

Aid is like a jigsaw puzzle - it is fragmented, complicated, and needs a lot of little pieces to be complete! We need to be able to see all those little pieces about aid - where it goes, when it works, when it doesn't - if it is ever going to make a real difference.

2. You don't want money to be wasted.

When donors don't publish their spending plans, this can lead to the duplication of efforts in some areas and under-funding in others. This hinders development, but it also means lots of money can be wasted.

3. Corruption is still a major problem.

To expose corruption, we need to be able to follow the money. NGOs, journalists, and pressure groups try to keep governments in check - but without knowing where money is meant to be spend, they can't properly fulfill this important role in society.

4. You have a right to know.
