    Project Avasar!!!

“I was always given clothes, but never had the option to choose them myself”. This is what most kids at an orphanage feel. And this is why Project Avasar was brought out by Dhakshina, a youth run organization which aims for a positive social capital development that will lead to a reformation of the country, by the utilization of resources that are usually under-appreciated. The main idea behind PROJECT AVASAR was to give these kids a chance to choose what they wanted to wear. It all started when the members of Dhakshina visited Santhwanam Charitable Trust, Cochin, as a part of another project “coffee on the wall”, and realized that the kids were never given that oppurtinity. Soon after, they formed into groups and recruited more members. This was the beginning of Project Avasar. With Parthas as the textile sponsor, the first phase of the project took place on the 14th of June, where 30 kids accompanied by volunteers were taken for shopping, and lunch at Gokul Oottupura. With Red FM 93.5 as the radio partner, Federal bank, RDS projects Ltd, and Synthite Pvt Ltd as the sponsors, this phase was a success. The funds for the project were raised on the 20th of June, when a fundraiser dinner and benefit concert was held at the Kochi Marriott Hotel. Coupons worth Rs. 1500 were sold to the guests. Mr. Vinod Kumar Gopal, assistant professor and the head of the nano solar lab at the Amrita University, was the chief guest at the event, and he was the one who launched the project. Along with the benefit concert, there was also a lucky draw competition held, where the prize was a 3-night stay at Thekkady. Dhakshina raised enough funds to sponsor clothes for a hundred kids, and with the surplus funds, plans to involve more orphanages are underway. To bring a smile on child's face, well thats something!
