Edinburgh University Students Have Been Told They Can't Strawpedo Drinks Any More

The art of downing a bottled alcoholic beverage very quickly with the help of a straw was banned by Edinburgh University's Students' Association, much to students' dismay. Some of the videos here contain strong language.

Edinburgh University's Student Association has been hit by controversy: It's banned strawpedoing at one of its biggest club nights.

The Urban Dictionary describes this booze trick thus:

A petition to get it reinstated at the weekly Big Cheese night has 450 signatures and someone tweeted this:

Tasha Boardman, the union's vice president for services, told The Scotsman: "We have a responsibility to operate in a socially responsible manner in accordance with licensing law.

"We had been seeing an increase in strawpedoing which is not deemed as responsible consumption under licensing legislation, which we have a duty to uphold.

"We removed the straws so we could communicate to customers when requesting a straw that strawpedoing is not a practice we allow and if caught they may be removed."

The Scotsman reported that a group of students tried to "storm" their way into a club night at the students' union on Saturday to strawpedo as an act of defiance at the ban.

The strawpedo benchmark was set in 2009 when this man downed a bottle of wine in four seconds.
