The Best Of The "93-Year-Old" Mum Voting Meme

Keith's mum has emerged as an unlikely star of the referendum.

It's polling day in some kind of big vote-type situation that you may have heard something about in the last six months. It is, I'm sure you'll all agree, very important.

But as people make important decisions about the future of the universe or some such, rest assured that legions of people are mercilessly taking the piss out of the democratic process on the internet.

Twitter's quite jokey again today. I like it. Bit whistling in the dark, but I still like it.

For example, here's Leave voter Keith Adams. He says he took his 93-year-old mum to the polling station this morning.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a very loud voice she said, "Which box for out?" A cheer went up from waiting voters

Little did Keith know that this tweet would unleash an EU meme mountain as people on Twitter came up with their own "93-year-old mum" tweets.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a very loud voice she said, "Re-e-wind" The waiting crowd cheered "Bo Selecta"

    They range from the funny...

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a v loud voice she said, "Chat shit, get banged" A cheer went up from waiting voters

    ...to the existential...

Took my blind 93 year old mother to vote. She said "existence is a bleak meaningless hell. I crave death". Everybody in the queue cheered.

    ...to the downright bizarre.

My 93 year old mum just said 'Why the fuck are you trying to eat tomato soup in a white top when your face is still numb, you idiot?'

Be warned: There are a lot of these.

just took my 93yo mum to vote. in a loud voice she said "which box to seize the means of production." A cheer went up from the crowd

    So many.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a loud voice she said, "jet fuel cant melt steel beams." A cheer went up from voters.

This morning, "Keith", "93yr mum", "took 93" and "my 93" were all trending on Twitter. It all got a bit out of hand.

I took my 93 year old mum to vote and she said, "you're far too late to this joke format" and the queue cheered.

    Seriously, sit tight.

Took my 93 year old mum to vote. She said loudly "2pac and the illuminati are controlling the pencils, use pens!" and a loud cheer went up.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, shes registered blind. In a loud voice she said "It's Britney Bitch". A cheer went up from the gay voters

I mean, the result isn't due until 7am on Friday – we've nothing else to do.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a loud voice she said, "͠Sòo̵n. ͞F̨r̶o̵m t̀he ̛ḑeep͟ he r̀is͏e͞s̕.”

There were many variations on the meme, including sports.

Took my 93 year old mum to vote, she said: "De Gea gets beat at his near post too often to be considered the best" A cheer went up.

Just took 93yr Mum to vote, she's registered blind. In a very loud voice she said, "fucks he playing Sterling for?" A cheer went up from wai

And, of course, lots of people didn't understand any of it, particularly non-Brits.

every brit I follow seems to have a 93yo mum.

The 93yr mum meme started to collide with other Twitter memes from times past, bewildering everyone who doesn't look at the internet all day.

Footballer Paul Gascoigne has arrived at the scene, saying he is a friend of Keith's 93 year old mum.

Took 93yr old mum and her friend to vote. #EUref

My cat took Paul Gascoigne to the kebab shop where my 93 year old mother gave him lamb mince. Everyone cheered.

Just saw Keith waiting outside the polling booth for his 93 year old mum. #keithsmum

It remains to be seen whether Keith's mum will have any bearing on the outcome of the referendum, however.

@SteveDoherty1 the result for that would probably be Leave: 2.1%, Remain: 14.7%, Keith’s Mum: 83.2%

But there was a twist in the tale: Keith was tweeting back in April 2015 that his mum was 91, casting doubt on the whole story.

Keith's mum with an April birthday all of a sudden.

Keith says he's going to "set up a blog" later and "set out the facts of my mum voting".

Then, later on Thursday, former prime minister and Remain campaigner Tony Blair earnestly held up this card and probably thought what could possibly go wrong?

Well, Twitter. Tony Blair has tweeted a picture of himself holding a white piece of card. I'm sure you'll behave.

And even that wasn't safe from the Keith's mum meme's clutches.

    UPDATE

As he promised he would, Keith Adams has written a blog post about the 93-year-old mum incident.

He says the incident really happened but admits he exaggerated the cheering bit.
