    World Book Day.

Today, as we celebrate World Book Day, a day to promote reading, publishing and copyright, let’s think about what can be done at school all year long to promote reading...

Promote your school library by advertising books, revision guides and other literature in your lessons. As a language department, we have recently placed some Spanish and French magazines in the library for students to read during break or lunch. We also set independent tasks from these magazines as homework, meaning that they HAVE to go to the library to do it and then feedback.

If you have an accommodating librarian, carry out some of your lessons actually in the library. An information hunt works best here where students follow clues to find information in books.

It is really important that we instil a love of reading with our students and, therefore, carrying out lessons that include reading at some stage of the lesson is fundamental. We should encourage them to open their minds, be creative and imaginative by reading a variety of literature and set examples through how we teach.

Promote your library, use it and teach students that it is not a place for just sitting in silence, but a place to escape and indulge in a good book.
