No, El Chapo Didn’t Escape From Prison, But The Memes Are Funny Anyway

Seriously, though, he’s still in prison.

On Friday, rumors began spreading on the internet that notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán had escaped prison for the third time.

1. But Mexico’s secretary of the interior squashed the rumors, tweeting a photo of El Chapo in prison Friday.

Guzmán famously escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico in 2001, and then again in 2015.

2. The rumor appears to have been spread through several fake news sources, like this spoof “ABC News” website:

Still, despite the rumors being proved false, Twitter users ran with it and produced some highly-fascinating reactions. “El Chapo” was even trending No. 1 on Twitter in the United States.
