Hilarie Burton: "Our guilty pleasure is Vanderpump Rules. We have watched from the beginning and it dawned on us, at about 1:00 in the morning the other day, that it was our show. Like it's the one show my husband [Jeffrey Dean Morgan] and I watch together as a couple."
"Also, I remember being very young and watching the original America's Funniest Home Videos with my family when Bob Saget hosted, and it was a weekend tradition. So, with our children, we've rediscovered that tradition. Our kids love [watching new episodes]."
"We have watched every kids movie on Disney+."
"I've been trying to use film as a way to supplement school a little bit. And so I showed my son The Journey of Natty Gann for the first time, which was a childhood favorite of mine."
"Sing is a big deal. [My daughter] has her very first crush, it is on Johnny the gorilla. She has like four Johnny plush dolls that all have to be together at all times. And my husband just bought her a life-size gorilla, and it has to go everywhere we go."
"And that includes Dana Schwartz's Noble Blood, which is such a juicy, like soap opera of nobility. I'm a history nerd, so Lore and Noble Blood are my jam."
"I have been going through a very big Alice Hoffman kick. She's a hero of mine and I appreciate the kind of women that she writes about. They're a little complicated, confrontational, not always very popular, and they persevere throughout the narratives. I think she was writing those kinds of female characters before it was popular."
"The Red Garden is my favorite of hers."
"I've been sewing quite a lot. It makes me want to sew other things. Obviously, I'm preoccupied right now with the masks of it all."
"We need masks more than ever because now we know everyone needs them. We need them for nursing homes, we need them for schools, we need them for grocery stores, for anybody who works in any facility that you have to go to."
"Just take masks with you and pass them out like Halloween candy. Make it a sign that you care about your friends and neighbors."
"I mean, my family is so sick of me cooking root vegetables. We are fortunate that we live in a farming community, and so I have not been to the grocery store since March."
"We have a weekly delivery from the local farms that drops off everything that we would need, but it only has produce that's in season, which at the end of spring is largely root vegetables. So we have had turnips, beets, rutabaga, and every kind of root vegetable you can think of prepared a hundred different ways."
"My son has been on a really large brownie kick. He's 10 now, so he can make them himself. He's constantly looking for holidays or occasions to make brownies. And so he's like, 'It's Mother's Day. It's Father's Day. It's your birthday. It's Tuesday. Let's make brownies to celebrate.'"
[For making masks] "Hand sewing is an option and I have posted videos on my Instagram teaching people how to do backstitching because that's a really, really easy stitch and it's sturdy. So if anybody doesn't have equipment but still wants to get involved, I would say learn an easy backstitch and all you need is a needle and thread."
Hilarie's book, The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm, is available now.
