12 Alternative Valentine’s Day Adventures

Are you tired of the typical "Dinner and a Movie" Valentine's Day date? I am. So I created this list of 12 alternative date ideas for you and your SO. They're inexpensive, can be done with some friends, and are adventurous! Enjoy and share if you love it!

1. Go on a hike!

Hiking is a great way to spend the day! Go to a local trail you love or have always wanted to try out. Bonus, most people will be at restaurants and elsewhere, so you may have the trail to yourself!

2. Donate money instead of spending your cash on a date.

The holidays just ended and you probably donated at the end of the year for tax deductions. But now it's mid February. Find a cause you and your SO are passionate about together and donate. The people receiving the donation will be so grateful, as February isn’t usually when people give. Plus, you get added bonuses of working with your SO, feeling good because you reached out, and didn’t spend money on yourself. Instead of spending money on an expensive date, donate it. If it’s one dollar or hundreds of dollars, it will be appreciated.

3. Watch a 'Cult Classic' film at home.

Skip the cliché movie on Valentine’s Day, and pick something a little different. The Princess Bride is my personal favorite, but there are many other great films out there. It's a quiet night at home with some laughs and quality time. Immerse yourself in all of the adventure this film has to offer.

4. "Magic Frog Turns to Prince" Gift

This gift uses water to turn a frog into a prince. Give this silly, fun, and inexpensive gift to your SO or friend! Instead of the more traditional Valentine’s Day gifts, give your SO a laugh with a cute note.

5. The Penny Date.

Everyone has a penny lying around that they don’t use. Put it to use! The game is simple:

1. Get dressed to go out and grab a penny.

2. Let your partner choose a number between 10 and 20 (this will be the number of times you flip the penny).

3. Get on the road and begin...heads is right, and tails is left.

4. Every time you come to a junction, flip the penny and turn in that direction.

5. Once you get to the number... Stop, look around, and make a date where you are.

6. Iron Chef America date.

Reenact the TV show Iron Chef America. One person purchases random food at the store, and the other person has to make a meal with that food. Not only is this fun, but you also get to avoid the restaurant crowds. If you’re terrible at cooking, it’s sure to be a night of laughter. And hey, at the end of the night, you can still order takeout if the food is that bad.

7. If you're into this, go to a comic book store if there's one in your area.

I get it, not everyone is into comics. But in light of all of the popular superhero movies and tv shows lately, it might be fun to go and check them out in comic form. Bonus: you can meet new people. Think of it as a variation to the bookstore date.

8. Watch your favorite childhood cartoons together.

Spend a relaxing night at home cuddling on the couch. Get to know your SO’s favorite stories and idols as a child, and reminisce. Let the nostalgia adventure begin. Many TV series from your childhood can be accessed fairly cheaply.

9. Go people-watching.

People watching can be an adventure anywhere. Find a nice spot to sit and talk, and watch all of the couples and singles go by. Not only is this date cheap, it’s practically guaranteed to be really funny. You can also make up stories about their lives and speculate about what kind of people they are. Don’t be too judgmental though, keep it in good spirits.

10. Host your own game night.

Get competitive and make it a game night! Pick your favorite games and enjoy some friendly (or not so friendly) competition. A game night is a really customizable way to have fun with the people you love, and it requires no frills.

11. Discover a new town together.

If you’re like me, there are many areas near your town that you’ve never been to. Grab a map, drive over there, and make a date with what you find! Even if it is a small town and you don’t spend much time there, you can make it a daytime road trip that could turn into a grand adventure.

12. Spend the day going to a local museum.

It may be your favorite place or somewhere you’ve always wanted to check out but would never admit it. The museums probably won’t be crowded, and you can discover new interests your SO has that you didn’t know about before. It could be an art, science, children’s or any type of museum. You can also invent adventurous stories about the exhibits.
