$550 A Week Is The Median Price For Rent In Australia — Here's What That Looks Like Around The World

Anyone else fancy packing up and moving to Madrid?

It's no secret that rental prices around Australia have been rising significantly, the impact of which has been taking its toll on Aussies all over the country.

Given that we've seen such staggering rises in both the prices of buying and renting a home around the country, it came as no surprise when Sydney was named the second most expensive city in the world in 2022 — with only Hong Kong topping us.

Aussies have understandably been sharing their discontent at how much something as basic as paying for their own home is setting them back, and have even been comparing how the cost of living crisis in Australia compares to other countries around the world.

So how do Aussie rental prices shape up? I wanted to compare what the average rental price in Australia could get you in cities around the world.

Spoiler alert: It's not this house in Texas.

According to Mozo, Melbourne is the cheapest Australian capital city to rent a house with an average price of $480 per week, while Canberra remains the most expensive with an average price of $690 per week. 

Mozo cites the median house rent for all capital cities in Australia, and together, these offer a median price of them all collectively, which Mozo states to be $550.

Using Google's currency exchange calculator, I took to the web to have a browse of what you could rent for $550 AUD. Here's what I found.

Madrid, Spain: $439/week
