The New School gave a home to the University in Exile and in 1934 incorporated this population of scholars into a new graduate program for political and social sciences. However, it is also true that our school was originally founded by a group of disenchanted academic rebels who were exiled from more orthodox institutions. And it is true that we helped found the École Libre des Hautes Études in Nazi-occupied France, which today is known as the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, a premiere research institute in Paris, with which TNS retains ties.
